The city's 80-year-old riverfront produce industry and several popular bars and restaurants were closed to make room for Paul Brown Stadium.

Demolition crews started clearing the way for the $400.3 million stadium complex on Jan. 29, 1998.

O'Rourke Construction Co. began tearing down a produce warehouse at Central Avenue and Mehring Way at 9 a.m.

Demolition work on Caddy's Complex and Flanagan's Landing, popular night spots on Pete Rose Way, started in late February. The 20-year-old Old Spaghetti Factory was demolished in March.

Flanagan's celebrated its last night with a traditional Irish wake in January, complete with hearse and undertaker.

Land owners in the path of the stadium were paid for their property. Castellini Inc., the largest landowner with 28 acres, received $36 million in a settlement. Three landowners rejected settlement offers as too low and went to court. In each case, the jury awarded more than the county had offered, leading county officials to increase the land budget for the stadium by $13.5 million.
