Levens goes from on his way out to Philly starting lineup

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Dorsey Levens was ready to call it a career. He barely played last year with the Giants and there was little demand for a 34-year-old backup.

But when Philadelphia running back Correll Buckhalter went down in the preseason with a season-ending injury, coach Andy Reid reached out to Levens. With leading rusher Brian Westbrook likely out of Sunday's game against Baltimore with a cracked rib, it's Levens' turn to start.

Levens never thought he'd get that chance again.

"I can't say that I did, honestly," Levens said Thursday. "At my age and position, it's just not a likely scenario at this point. But it's here and it's time to go."

Levens has 86 yards rushing on 20 carries and one touchdown this year.

It's Levens' first start since Dec. 16, 2001, in his final season with Green Bay. After rushing for 1,034 yards with the Packers in 1999, Levens has only 1,082 since.

RAVENS: All-Pro left tackle Jonathan Ogden signed a seven-year contract with Baltimore.

The deal should allow the seven-time Pro Bowler to finish his career with the Ravens.

Ogden is sidelined with a pulled left hamstring.

He entered the league as the No. 4 overall draft pick in 1996 and the Ravens' inaugural draft pick.

After a year at guard, he moved to tackle.

L.A. BY MAY?: The NFL hopes by May to select a site for a potential franchise in the Los Angeles area.

Team owners and representatives spent about 40 minutes Thursday discussing four proposed venues for a team in L.A.: the Coliseum, the Rose Bowl and sites in Anaheim and Carson.

The Los Angeles area has been without an NFL franchise since before the 1995 season, when the Raiders left the Coliseum to return to Oakland and the Rams moved from Anaheim to St. Louis. Tagliabue said he hopes to have a team back there in 2008 or 2009.

VIKINGS: Receiver Randy Moss will definitely suit up for Minnesota's game against the New York Giants this weekend despite a hamstring injury, coach Mike Tice said Thursday. Tice still wouldn't say what kind of role Moss would play.

JAGUARS: Running back Fred Taylor returned to practice and expects to play at Houston this week. He sat out drills Wednesday with a strained quadriceps muscle.
