Billick: Lewis should be with team
The Associated Press
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick wants the NFL to amend the rule that forbids running back Jamal Lewis from appearing at the team's training complex during his two-week suspension.
Lewis was suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy after he pleaded guilty Oct. 7 to using a phone to set up a drug buy in 2000.
He will miss Baltimore's home game against Buffalo on Sunday and a game in Philadelphia on Oct. 31. Lewis can maintain contact with the Ravens by phone during his suspension but is not permitted to enter the training complex.
"To totally isolate a guy from the team I don't think is in the best interest of the team, it's not in the best interest of the athlete, it's not in the best interest of the league," Billick said.
Lewis has remained in touch with the Ravens during his suspension, Billick said, and is focused on staying in football shape.
BROWNS: Wide receiver Andre Davis has a cast on his left foot and might miss Cleveland's game Sunday against Philadelphia.
"I expect to be out there," said Davis, who has turf toe.
PACKERS: Offensive coordinator Tom Rossley said that while he recovers from his heart operation, coach Mike Sherman will keep calling the plays. With Rossley watching on television from his home Sunday, Sherman made a strong debut as a play-caller in the Packers' 38-10 win at Detroit that snapped a four-game losing skid.
JAGUARS: Quarterback Byron Leftwich missed most of practice with a sprained ankle, but he was optimistic he would play Sunday at Indianapolis.
PANTHERS: Running back Stephen Davis was sidelined at practice with a lingering knee injury. He had surgery Sept. 17 and returned to action last week.
"He didn't re-injure it," coach John Fox said. "He's had swelling in his knee, really all season. ... We'll evaluate it (today)."
CARDINALS: Wide receiver Anquan Boldin is nearly ready to return to the lineup for the first time since being sidelined two months ago by knee surgery. Last season's NFL rookie of the year donned pads for the first time since injuring his right knee in training camp. He expects to be ready to play at Buffalo on Oct. 31.
PRO BOWL: The Pro Bowl will remain in Hawaii through 2009 after the state and the NFL reached agreement on a new contract.
