Hip injury will sideline Giants' Carter

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Tim Carter, the New York Giants' best deep-threat receiver, might miss the rest of the season with a hip injury.

The team may put Carter on injured reserve, although it is not clear if the third-year pro will need surgery for a possible fracture in the hip area, coach Tom Coughlin said.

Coughlin believed the injury happened when Carter and a defender went sprawling after a ball in the end zone in New York's win Sunday at Dallas.

Carter has had each of his three seasons cut short by injury. He appeared in five games as a rookie before being sidelined with a torn Achilles' tendon. He played 12 games last year, starting two, but missed the end of the season with a concussion.

Carter has 12 receptions for 182 yards (15.2 average, best on the team) and a 38-yard touchdown catch.

BROWNS: Kellen Winslow Jr., who broke his right leg and tore ligaments Sept. 19 in Dallas, spoke to reporters Monday for the first time since getting hurt and undergoing two operations.

Leaning against a wall in the team's locker room, Winslow said he should have his cast removed soon and expects to be walking in a few weeks.

Winslow is also taking comfort in his father's recovery from a similar injury the Hall of Famer suffered during his rookie season with the San Diego Chargers.

"My dad had the same injury his first year and he came back and led the league in receptions the next two years," Winslow said.

Winslow Sr. had 89 catches in 1980 and 88 in 1981.

DOLPHINS: Jay Fiedler has a cracked rib and A.J. Feeley has a concussion. So Miami may have to turn to third-string quarterback Sage Rosenfels when it plays the Buffalo Bills this weekend in a matchup of the NFL's last two winless teams.

Rosenfels has not played this year. He is 4-for-9 for one touchdown in four NFL seasons.

Fiedler has a 50-50 chance of playing Sunday at Buffalo, agent Brian Levy said, adding Fiedler was experiencing much pain.

Coach Dave Wannstedt said Monday that Fiedler would start if he's able.

PANTHERS: DeShaun Foster joined Carolina's growing list of injured offensive stars and will be out six to 10 weeks with a broken collarbone. Star receiver Steve Smith is out indefinitely with a broken leg, top running back Stephen Davis has missed three games following knee surgery and kick returner Rod Smart, also the No. 3 running back, is out with a knee injury.

BUCCANEERS: Chris Simms' first NFL start lasted 19 plays, and it may be a while before he plays again for Tampa Bay. Although the second-year quarterback is day-to-day with a left shoulder sprain, coach Jon Gruden said Brian Griese, who came off the bench to pace Sunday's 20-17 win over New Orleans, will start next Monday night at St. Louis.

LIONS: Wide receiver Roy Williams may be available for the team's game next Sunday with Green Bay. The rookie is day-to-day after spraining his left ankle in Sunday's game. Williams had an ultrasound Monday morning, which showed the injury was not a high ankle sprain. He will be evaluated again Wednesday.

VIKINGS: Punt returner and reserve wide receiver Keenan Howry is out indefinitely after injuring his right shoulder in Sunday's game at Houston. Howry was scheduled for an MRI test Monday after the shoulder popped in and out of its socket during Sunday's game.

REDSKINS: Safety Matt Bowen is out for the season with a torn ligament in his right knee. The fifth-year player tore the anterior cruciate ligament when he planted his foot awkwardly while covering a punt in the first quarter of Sunday night's loss to Baltimore.
