Favre tosses TD after suffering concussion

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre suffered a concussion in the third quarter of the Packers' 14-7 loss to the Giants when defensive lineman William Joseph knocked him to the ground.

Favre, whose helmet bounced off the grass, sat out two plays before returning to throw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Javon Walker on fourth-and-5. After celebrating the touchdown, Favre was summoned to the sideline, where medical personnel said he displayed signs of a concussion.

Coach Mike Sherman said he shouldn't have sent Favre back in.

"Well, he was standing there on the sideline. I said, 'Are you OK?' He said yes. So, I put him back in," Sherman said. "He threw the touchdown pass and then the doctors told me they didn't want him back in the ballgame."

Favre's TD extended his streak to 29 games with at least one scoring pass, third longest in NFL history behind Dan Marino's 30 and Johnny Unitas' 47.

Jaguars T Mike Pearson damaged ligaments in his left knee against the Colts and could be out for the year. ... RB Rod Smart, aka "He Hate Me," sprained his left knee on a kickoff return in the same game. ... Atlanta RB Warrick Dunn strained his left hamstring against the Panthers. ... Steelers LB Kendrell Bell missed his fourth consecutive game with a groin injury. His replacement, Larry Foote, had the first sack of his career and also led the team with nine solo tackles and 11 total tackles. ... 49ers CB Mike Rumph broke his right arm against St. Louis. Rumph, who missed the 49ers' last two games with a strained groin, was injured early in the second quarter while attempting a tackle.
