Ravens' Lewis negotiating plea in drug case

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

ATLANTA - Lawyers for Jamal Lewis are in plea negotiations with federal prosecutors in the Baltimore Ravens running back's drug conspiracy case, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

Citing unidentified lawyers familiar with the case, the newspaper reported federal prosecutors have offered a deal in which Lewis would receive a sentence of less than one year in prison.

Acting U.S. Attorney Sally Yates and a lawyer for Lewis declined to comment on the report when contacted by The Associated Press on Friday.

Last week, when asked about the possibility of a plea deal for Lewis, one of his lawyers, Jerome Froelich, told the AP that lawyers in the case were preparing for his trial, which is set to start Nov. 1.

Lewis, 24, is accused of helping broker a cocaine deal for a friend, Angelo Jackson, during conversations with a government informant in Atlanta during the summer of 2000. Both Lewis and Jackson have pleaded not guilty.

TITANS: Steve McNair stretched and ran Friday, but he didn't throw any passes. Yet he's looking healthy enough that Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher won't rule him out against San Diego.

After the quarterback bruised his sternum in last week's loss to the Jaguars, sending him to the hospital for two nights, Fisher said he didn't think McNair would be able to play against the Chargers.

Fisher said Friday that McNair has "improved significantly."

"We are going to have a walkthrough out there tomorrow, and we will see how he is tomorrow," Fisher said.

McNair said he wasn't sure if he will play and that it depends on how he feels Sunday.

CHIEFS: The stitches came out of Dante Hall's infected lower lip and Kansas City's Pro Bowl kick returner was back at practice. Hall said he expected to be back to full speed in time for Monday night's game at Baltimore.

"People have been telling me not to give them any lip," Hall said with a laugh.

The swelling had subsided considerably after the seven stitches were removed.

PACKERS: A woman sued Green Bay fullback Najeh Davenport, saying he invaded her privacy by breaking into her dorm room and defecating in her closet.

Mary McCarthy was seeking more than $15,000 in damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Florida Circuit Court.

Criminal charges were settled in October 2002 when Davenport agreed to perform community service. He denied breaking into the Barry University dormitory.

According to police, Davenport entered a dorm room at the small Catholic university in suburban Miami in the early morning hours of April 1.

GIANTS: The NFL fined three New York defenders a total of $20,000 for illegal hits during last weekend's game with the Cleveland Browns.

Rookie safety Gibril Wilson and cornerback Terry Cousin were each fined $7,500 for helmet-to-helmet hits, and linebacker Barrett Green was docked $5,000 for hitting quarterback Jeff Garcia in the back with the crown of his helmet.

The players have 10 days to appeal the fines. All three said they would.

EAGLES: From unemployment to the starting lineup - it hasn't been a bad week for fullback Josh Parry. Coach Andy Reid said Friday that Parry probably will be the starting fullback against Chicago, filling the void created by Jon Ritchie's season-ending knee injury. It's the first career start for Parry, who has been cut twice already this year by the Eagles.

JETS: Left tackle Jason Fabini was downgraded to questionable Friday with a sore back, leaving his status in doubt for this weekend's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Fabini, a University of Cincinnati product, had been listed as probable but didn't practice all week.
