Super Bowl spurred Sanders

New Raven says he returned for title, not paycheck

OWINGS MILLS, Md.—Deion Sanders insists he didn't come out of retirement for money or accolades, or to prove he still has a wealth of talent at age 37.

The man known as "Prime Time" ended his three-year hiatus because he wanted to win a third Super Bowl ring—this time with a couple of friends who pleaded with him to join the Baltimore Ravens.

Sanders practiced Wednesday with the Ravens and worked an extra 15 minutes with secondary coach Johnnie Lynn and safety Corey Fuller, who along with linebacker Ray Lewis persuaded Sanders to return to the NFL.

"I wanted the opportunity to win it all, and that's it," Sanders said.

Sanders didn't think the 2001 Washington Redskins could reach the Super Bowl, so he chose to retire before that season.

"I walked away from how many millions of dollars in Washington? I didn't think that team could get it done," he said.

Though Sanders eventually might be moved to cornerback, a position where he used to dominate, and hinted he could play some on offense, he will begin his Ravens career as a nickel back.

Does that mean Sanders no longer intends to be Prime Time?

"When did I stop being Prime Time?" Sanders asked, smiling broadly. "I didn't get that memo."

JETS: Chad Pennington agreed to a $64 million, seven-year contract extension that includes $23 million in guaranteed money.

A source familiar with the negotiations, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Pennington will average $9.172 million a year. The quarterback, entering his fifth season, also received the second-largest amount of up-front money, behind only Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning's $34.5 million signing bonus earlier this year.

Both contracts were negotiated by Tom Condon, who was not available for comment Wednesday.

The size of Pennington's deal could cripple the Jets in future free agent negotiations. Defensive ends John Abraham and Shaun Ellis, tight end Anthony Becht and running back LaMont Jordan are in the final year of their contracts.

TITANS: Doctors removed torn cartilage from wide receiver Tyrone Calico's left knee, and cornerback Samari Rolle met with a doctor for a second opinion on his sore right ankle. Calico is expected to be sidelined up to three weeks.

BROWNS: Defensive back Lewis Sanders re-signed with the Browns. Financial terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

DOLPHINS: Miami signed defensive end Chidi Ahanotu, an 11-year veteran who played in all 16 games with San Francisco last season and recorded 30 tackles and four sacks.
