Colts' sideline getting crowded

Injuries an issue for game vs. Bills

The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Injuries could keep several Indianapolis Colts players on the sideline in Saturday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

A handful of others, including punter Hunter Smith and receiver Reggie Wayne, are questionable as the Colts prepare for the game in the RCA Dome. Cornerback Donald Strickland, who had been bothered with a shoulder injury, practiced Wednesday and Thursday and should be able to start against the Bills, coach Tony Dungy said.

"Reggie has a chance to play. If he feels good in warmups, he should be able to go," Dungy said. "Strickland seemed to be fine and I think he's going to be fine for the game."

Wayne did not practice Wednesday because of a strain in his heel. He saw limited work Thursday, while Brandon Stokley, who missed last week's game against the Jets because of a groin injury, went through a full practice.

Dungy said he would not decide on their availability until just before kickoff Saturday night.

Also questionable were Smith (groin) and cornerback Joseph Jefferson (knee).

Dungy said he planned to play his starting offensive and defensive units into the third quarter Saturday.

"The (first-team) defense may play a little longer than the offense, but probably mid-third quarter we'll start to substitute," Dungy said. "We've got some guys that we want to see that we want to make some roster decisions on."

Among those not expected to play are wide receivers Troy Walters (broken arm), Aaron Moorehead (shoulder) and Elgin Hicks (leg); running back Brian Allen (knee); defensive ends Robert Mathis (knee/wrist) and Nautyn McKay-Loescher (hamstring); and free safety Idrees Bashir (ribs). Also unlikely to play are defensive tackles Tank Reese (knee) and David Pugh (knee), cornerbacks Willie Miles (knee) and Corey Chamblin (knee), tight end Ben Utecht (groin), outside linebacker Gilbert Gardner (ankle), and offensive tackle Patrick Venzke (knee).
