Niners, Peterson finally reach deal
LB ends holdout, signs for one year
The Associated Press
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - All-Pro linebacker Julian Peterson ended his holdout Wednesday and signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
Peterson, designated by the team in February as its franchise player, missed the first 28 days of training camp because of contract issues. Peterson and his agents had been looking for a deal that would make him one of the NFL's highest-paid defenders.
Peterson signed a $6.073 million offer tendered to him by the team to play this season. That figure represents the average of the NFL's five highest-paid players at his position.
"Julian basically wants to get in here and play football," coach Dennis Erickson said.
Peterson was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro honors last season when he had 144 tackles and led the 49ers with seven sacks.
Erickson said Peterson would travel with the 49ers to Minnesota today for Friday's exhibition game against the Vikings.
RAIDERS: Coach Norv Turner wants holdout cornerback Charles Woodson to be in camp next week, and it seems likely to happen.
Carl Poston told the Contra Costa Times on Tuesday that Woodson would report next week and is eager to get started. But Raiders senior personnel executive Michael Lombardi said he hadn't been told Woodson would be in camp.
Woodson is seeking a long-term deal and reportedly wants to be the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
BILLS: Rookie quarterback J.P. Losman will have surgery today to repair his broken left leg.
Losman, the second of Buffalo's two first-round picks, broke his fibula in Tuesday's practice. The initial prognosis is Losman will miss between two and three months.
VIKINGS: The NFL rejected defensive end Kenny Mixon's appeal of a two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Mixon will be eligible to return to the active roster Sept. 21.
RAMS: Cornerback Travis Fisher had surgery on his broken right arm, and coach Mike Martz would not speculate how long the player might be sidelined. Initial reports had projected Fisher, who started 15 games and tied for the team lead with four interceptions last year, would miss most of the season.
Quarterback Marc Bulger expects to play Friday against Washington despite a bruised knee.
GIANTS: Kurt Warner will start at quarterback Friday against the Jets, although his competition with rookie Eli Manning for the regular-season job continues.
Coach Tom Coughlin said Warner, a two-time MVP, and Manning, the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, will get about the same amount of snaps with the first-team offense.
DOLPHINS: Offensive tackle Damion McIntosh, who had sat out since the start of training camp because of an ankle injury, worked out for a second consecutive day, giving Miami hope he will be able to contribute early this season.
FALCONS: Michael Vick, who has a sore right hamstring, practiced a second straight day and expects to play Saturday against Cincinnati. Coach Jim Mora wants his starters to play the first half but hasn't decided how much Vick will play.
"It's nothing that'll set me back," the Atlanta quarterback said.
TITANS: Cornerback Samari Rolle and defensive tackle James Atkins returned to practice.
Rolle has not practiced since Aug. 11 because of swelling and soreness in his right ankle. Atkins had loose cartilage removed from his left knee Aug. 10.
PACKERS: Green Bay signed former Giants defensive end Kenny Holmes to a one-year, minimum-wage deal worth $660,000.
