Miami gets receiver for holdout lineman

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

The Chicago Bears acquired Pro Bowl defensive end Adewale Ogunleye from Miami Dolphins on Saturday for receiver Marty Booker and a third-round draft choice in 2005.

The deal was contingent on Ogunleye reaching a contract agreement with the Bears, and he accepted a six-year, $33.4 million deal, agent Drew Rosenhaus said.

Ogunleye, who led the AFC with 15 sacks last season, had been unsigned and at a stalemate in negotiations with Miami since May.

For the Dolphins, the deal shores up a receiving corps depleted by injuries, including David Boston's season-ending knee injury. The Bears have been seeking to upgrade their pass rush, and starting end Alex Brown has been sidelined this summer by a sprained calf muscle.

Ogunleye's deal includes a $15 million signing bonus - $10 million initially, and $5 million at the end of the season.

"We're pleased the Bears stepped up," Rosenhaus said. "Wale is ecstatic. He's set for life, and he becomes one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the history of the league."

Booker wasn't in uniform for the Bears' exhibition game Saturday night against San Francisco.

The five-year veteran from Northeast Louisiana had 100 catches for 1,071 yards in 2001, and 97 for 1,189 yards in 2002, when he made Pro Bowl.

He missed three games with ankle injury last season and was limited to 52 receptions for 715 yards.

EAGLES: Correll Buckhalter will require season-ending surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his right knee that was torn in the first quarter against Baltimore Friday.

On the first play of the Eagles' second possession, Buckhalter took a handoff, made a cut, and before being touched, crumbled to the turf. He eventually was carted off the field.

"It's sad to see. Correll came in in great shape," coach Andy Reid said. "It was a crazy one where no one hit him - he just made a plant and the thing went out."

The injury leaves the Eagles thin at running back. Last season, Buckhalter rushed for 542 yards to go with a team-high eight touchdowns while spitting time with Brian Westbrook and Duce Staley, who signed with the Steelers.

This is the second season-ending injury for Buckhalter since the Eagles picked him in the fourth round of the 2001 draft. After showing promise as a rookie - he averaged 4.5 yards per carry and rushed for a pair of touchdowns - Buckhalter tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the first minicamp before his second season.

BUCCANEERS: Oliver Gibson, who played with the Bengals for five years, signed with Tampa Bay. The 32-year-old defensive lineman was released by Buffalo last week.
