GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany - Top NFL executive Roger Goodell is optimistic about the fate of NFL Europe even though owners haven't reached an agreement to keep the developmental league alive past 2005.
"We've got very positive support from NFL owners and from players. We're very optimistic about the future of the league," said Goodell, NFL chief operating officer and No. 2 man behind commissioner Paul Tagliabue.
Goodell said a status report on the developmental league was presented to owners two weeks ago, and a plan for the league's future will be drawn up in the summer. A concrete decision isn't expected until after the 2005 season.
The NFL has never released figures on the league's financial losses, although officials say NFL Europe's value to the game can't be measured just monetarily.
The league also is looking into moving some of its franchises. There is talk the Scottish Claymores would move to Gelsenkirchen. Four of the six teams in the league already are located in Germany.
WORLD BOWL: Wide receiver Richard Alston threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Chas Gessner on a trick play, helping the Berlin Thunder beat the Frankfurt Galaxy 30-24 to win World Bowl XII at Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
The Thunder (10-1) matched the 1991 London Monarchs for the league's best mark, but it wasn't easy. Berlin fumbled on its first four drives, and the teams combined for 10 turnovers.
League leading rusher Eric McCoo gained 167 yards on 28 carries for the Thunder, including a 69-yard touchdown run.
