Foot injury ends season for Redskins' Ramsey
Dolphins QB Fiedler uncertain for matchup vs. Eagles
The Associated Press
ASHBURN, Va. - Patrick Ramsey is done for the season, placed on injured reserve before he undergoes foot surgery.
The Washington Redskins quarterback said Monday he will have surgery on his right foot in the next two weeks, ending his first year as an NFL starter.
"We just really felt like it wasn't going to get better by the end of the season," Ramsey said after meeting with a team doctor.
Ramsey has been bothered by the flare-up of an old fracture on the right edge of his foot. The injury's origins are unknown, but it first became a problem during training camp and was aggravated in the last few weeks.
He sat out the Redskins' last two games, against New Orleans and the New York Giants. After wearing a cast for a few days, he reinjured the foot in practice.
With the Redskins (5-8) virtually out of the playoff picture, Ramsey stood to gain little by playing with such an injury. He should be able to return in time for next spring's minicamps.
"We felt like we needed to get him well," coach Steve Spurrier said.
In 11 starts, Ramsey completed 179-of-337 passes with 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Midseason pickup Tim Hasselbeck will start the remaining three games. He completed 13-of-19 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-7 victory over the Giants Sunday.
DOLPHINS: Quarterback Jay Fiedler aggravated a knee injury that earlier had sidelined him for four games. His status is uncertain for the Dolphins' game next Monday against Philadelphia.
Fiedler re-injured his left knee during Sunday's 12-0 loss at New England. He finished the game, but was limping afterward.
"In my estimation it's not as significant as when he first did this," trainer Kevin O'Neill said.
Fiedler first hurt his knee Oct. 19, also against New England.
TITANS: Steve McNair had an MRI on his sprained left ankle. The injury has made it difficult for McNair to walk, and coach Jeff Fisher said his quarterback won't practice this week.
Fisher said the Titans expect the MRI to confirm a sprained ankle. A walking boot was placed on the ankle to stabilize it.
McNair's status for Sunday's game against Buffalo is uncertain. "If he can play, he'll play," Fisher said.
BRONCOS: Defensive tackle Daryl Gardener was deactivated for the rest of the season so he can seek treatment for unspecified personal issues. Gardener, suspended twice for a total of three games for conduct detrimental to the team, was to join the team Monday.
Gardener's agent said the player wasn't being treated for alcohol or drugs.
RAIDERS: Quarterback Rick Mirer plans to play Sunday against Baltimore despite a sprained left ankle. And it's a good thing, considering Mirer is the Raiders' third-stringer-turned-starter; Rich Gannon and backup Marques Tuiasosopo are out for the season.
GIANTS: Kerry Collins' streak of starting 67 straight games at quarterback for New York probably is going to end because of an ankle injury. He was listed as doubtful for Sunday's game at New Orleans, and coach Jim Fassel said Jesse Palmer probably will start.
Collins' streak is two games shy of the team record set by Fran Tarkenton (1967-71).
LIONS: Detroit placed safety Corey Harris (torn right hamstring) and long snapper Bradford Banta (broken collarbone) on injured reserve.
Guard Eric (ankle sprain) is expected to miss Sunday's game at Kansas City.
JETS: Wide receiver/kick returner Jonathan Carter is probably out for the season because of a sprained left knee, and defensive end John Abraham is out for this weekend's game against Pittsburgh with a strained groin.
CARDINALS: Josh McCown will get his first start for Arizona, replacing Jeff Blake when the 3-10 Cardinals host Carolina. The move came a day after Blake missed on his first seven passes and San Francisco took a 21-0 lead on the way to a 50-14 victory.
