Burris doubtful against Ravens

Cornerback still recovering from second concussion

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cornerback Jeff Burris will probably remain doubtful for the game Sunday at Baltimore.

He is still recovering from a second concussion he suffered at Arizona on Nov. 2.

Reggie Kelly returned to the lineup at Pittsburgh and was a little sore afterwards, coach Marvin Lewis said Monday.

The Bengals continue to enjoy remarkable health. They are the only team not to place a player on the injured reserve list because of a season-ending injury. They also have rallied to win three games in the fourth quarter, where physical conditioning comes into play, and have a 10-point composite scoring edge in the final 15 minutes.

LUCKY SEVEN: Not counting Monday night's Jets-Titans game, the Bengals are ranked seventh in total offense at 342.6 yards a game.

The Bengals last finished a season in the top 10 with a ninth-place ranking in 1990 - the last year they made the playoffs.

The Bengals are 10th in scoring at 22.3 points a game.

The Bengals are tied for 22nd in total defense (yards allowed) and tied for 21st in points allowed at 22.2.

ANOTHER CHANCE: As a franchise, the Bengals have lost 39 games in a row on the road to teams with winning records. The Bengals will play at Baltimore on Sunday against the 7-5 Ravens.

The Bengals last beat a team with a winning record on the road on Dec. 2, 1990, when they beat the Steelers, who had a 6-5 record coming in.

Not one of the Bengals' six road opponents this season had a winning record at the time of their game.

CHAD CHECK: Wide receiver Chad Johnson remains first in the AFC with 1,105 receiving yards, which is good for third in the NFL after 12 games. Quarterback Jon Kitna has the fourth best passer rating, 91.2, in the AFC, which is seventh in the NFL.

GOOD JOB, MARVIN: Former Raiders coach Art Shell, writing Monday on NFL.com, praised the job Lewis is doing with the Bengals. Shell, the second of eight NFL minority head coaches, wrote that Lewis' success will help other minority coaches get jobs.

"The fact that Lewis does happen to be a minority head coach should not be overlooked," wrote Shell, who listed Cowboys offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon and Colts defensive coordinator and former Bengals assistant Ron Meeks as top minority candidates for upcoming vacancies.

Lewis is one of three minority head coaches in the NFL this season. His Bengals are 7-5, Tony Dungy's Colts are 9-3, and Herman Edwards' Jets are 4-7 going into the Monday night game.

RUDI'S NUMBER: Because of inconsistent stats supplied by the NFL, Rudi Johnson's season rushing yards are 691 - not 701.
