Refs drop ball in Ravens' win

Time-keeping error aids Baltimore

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - An officiating blunder Sunday gave Baltimore critical extra time in its fourth-quarter comeback victory over Seattle, the NFL said Monday.

NFL supervisor of officials Mike Pereira said both the 40-second clock and the game clock should have been restarted after an officials' conference over a penalty call with 58 seconds left in regulation. The Seahawks had the ball and led 41-38.

Because the clock wasn't started, the Ravens had 39 seconds left instead of four or five when they got the ball back on downs at the Baltimore 33.

They ended up tying the game on Matt Stover's field goal following a key 44-yard pass interference penalty. Baltimore won 44-41 in overtime.

Ravens coach Brian Billick conceded that his team benefited from the mistake by referee Tom White and his crew.

"There was, I believe, an administrative error in there, in that the clock should have been wound more quickly," Billick said.

BUCS 19, GIANTS 13: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are perfect in the post-Keyshawn Johnson era.

Playing with a sense of urgency lacking for much of the season, the defending Super Bowl champions revived their playoff hopes.

Brad Johnson threw for 269 yards and one touchdown, helping the Bucs (5-6) stop a three-game losing streak in their first outing since Keyshawn Johnson was deactivated for the remainder of the season because of differences with coach Jon Gruden.

RAMS: Coach Mike Martz is sticking with Marc Bulger at QB, despite five turnovers in Sunday's overtime win against Arizona.

JAGUARS: Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said he is considering starting David Garrard at QB in place of Byron Leftwich next week against Tampa Bay.

SAINTS: Quarterback Aaron Brooks was sent for an MRI on his right knee Monday.

TEXANS: Houston won't know whether David Carr (groin) can play next weekend against Atlanta until his workout Wednesday.

BRONCOS: Tight end Shannon Sharpe separated rib cartilage against Chicago in the fourth quarter of Denver's 19-10 loss. He may not play next week.

BROWNS: Linebacker Ben Taylor remained hospitalized with a staph infection in his elbow. Taylor, who has started eight games, was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic Saturday with a high fever.

BEARS: Despite helping Chicago snap a 12-game road losing streak Sunday, Bears coach Dick Jauron said Chris Chandler, not Kordell Stewart, will remain the team's starter if he's healthy.

JETS: Defensive end John Abraham (groin) is doubtful for the Tennessee game.

BILLS: Rookie receiver Sam Aiken underwent arthroscopic surgery for torn cartilage in his right knee and his status is uncertain for the rest of the season.
