Flutie makes statement for club of middle-aged

NFL insider

Ask Mark
Doug Flutie turned 41 in October and struck a blow for middle-aged men everywhere in San Diego's 42-28 victory against Minnesota.

The last time a quarterback older than Flutie started and won was 1975, when Earl Morrall - six months older than Flutie - led Miami to a victory over New England.

When Flutie ran for two touchdowns against the Vikings, he became the oldest player in NFL history to have two rushing touchdowns in a game.

REALLY OFFENSIVE: In the past seven games, Buffalo is averaging 11 points a game.

In their last four road games, the Bills offense has scored 12 points - three field goals - and committed 16 turnovers.

Their 21 points overall in the last four road games are the most futile four-game stretch since they had 20 in 1971. They have a defensive score and a safety, adding up to 21.

Quarterback Drew Bledsoe ranks 21st in the NFL in passing efficiency and 31st in touchdown passes per attempt. He has six touchdown passes and eight interceptions this season, to go along with 26 sacks.

TRINITY: The Saints are the only team in the league with a top 10 passer, rusher and receiver: quarterback Aaron Brooks (9th), running back Deuce McAllister (5th) and wide receiver Joe Horn (10th). ... Saints players and coaches raved about the new state-of-the-art AstroPlay field at the Superdome after playing on it for the first time at practice Tuesday afternoon.

NOT ANY MORE: "This place, Lambeau Field, has been almost a shoo-in for us. It shows there are no guarantees." So said quarterback Brett Favre about the Packers, who have lost four of their last six games at home, beginning with the wild-card playoff loss to Atlanta in January.

BILL VS. BILL: When the Cowboys play at New England today, it will mark the fifth time Bill Parcells has played his former defensive coordinator, Bill Belichick, as a head coach. They've split four games.

ETC.: Home teams are 2-8 on Monday night, a 20.0 winning percentage. The worst home winning percentage was 38.5 in 1972. ... Miami's Ricky Williams has averaged 58.3 yards rushing over his last six games. ... Colts coach Tony Dungy has defeated 31 of 32 teams in his career. If he beats the Jets today, he'll have his 32nd victim. ... Parcells also has 31. He hasn't beaten the Houston Texans. ... Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio says the officials are protecting Titans quarterback Steve McNair these days. ... The Titans elevated linebacker Jordan Kramer - son of former Packers guard Jerry Kramer - from their practice squad to the active roster. He will play some special teams.

AFC NORTH: The injury Sunday night to Ravens starting quarterback Kyle Boller has exposed a flaw in the otherwise solid Baltimore organization. Coach Brian Billick's history with quarterbacks is not good.

Anthony Wright will be the 10th quarterback to start for Billick since Billick arrived in Baltimore in 1999. He has started two in each of his five seasons. Billick also has not had the same opening day starter twice.

His starters: Scott Mitchell, Stoney Case, Tony Banks, Trent Dilfer, Elvis Grbac, Randall Cunningham, Chris Redman, Jeff Blake, Boller and Wright. And if Wright does not perform well, Billick is expected to turn quickly to Ray Lucas, who signed Tuesday. ... In Cleveland, the Browns are in hot water with the NFL Players Association for their one-game suspension of running back William Green following his DUI arrest Oct. 27. The players union said the Collective Bargaining Agreement says the commissioner must dole out discipline for incidents related to drugs or alcohol. There's more than Green's $17,647 game check at stake. The union says the suspension prevents Green from meeting incentives that escalate his salaries in future seasons. ... In Pittsburgh, coach Bill Cowher is concerned about Jerome Bettis' three lost fumbles in a 43-carry span over three games, especially after he had lost just one fumble in his previous 981 carries. Cowher had this to say about whether a game pitting the 3-6 Steelers against the 4-5 49ers on Monday night had enough entertainment value for ABC: "I don't care what the networks think."
