Notebook: Glenn's glad to be a Cowboy

Move to Dallas results in big stats for receiver and team

The Associated Press

IRVING, Texas - Terry Glenn can't explain the drops. By his count, he's had six or seven this season after coming in with only five for his career.

"I don't drop balls, man," he said.

But Glenn was smiling when he said it. He's full of grins these days because the Dallas Cowboys are tied for the best record in the NFC and Glenn is a big reason for it.

"I feel comfortable. I feel at home," Glenn said. "I feel like I'm a part of what's going on, I feel like I need to be a part of what's going on for us to be successful and I'm happy about that. I want it."

Glenn was the first player the Cowboys acquired after Bill Parcells was hired as coach. Dallas traded a conditional draft pick to Green Bay to get him, a cheap price for a two-time 1,000-yard receiver coming off a strong season.

Glenn caught 56 passes for 817 yards for the Packers and avoided the off-field problems that cost him his job in New England.

Non-football issues have dogged Glenn since his rookie season, when Parcells, then his the Patriots' coach, referred to him as "she." Parcells was angry because Glenn was hurt, and because the team drafted the receiver when the coach wanted someone else. While that also led to Parcells' departure, he and Glenn ended up becoming close friends.

So far, their reunion is working.

"I love it," Glenn said. "He gave me an opportunity."

Glenn leads Dallas with 32 catches, 432 yards and five touchdowns, three in one game. Those numbers are even more impressive considering he was shut out in two of the first three games.

But the biggest stat is 6-2, the Cowboys' record. They already have more wins than they did in any of the last three seasons.

"Any time you can win when people don't expect you to, it's always a fulfilling feeling," Glenn said. "It's good to see coach Parcells have that glory."

CHARGERS: Doug Flutie took the majority of snaps for the second straight day, but coach Marty Schottenheimer said he'll wait until today to announce his starting quarterback for this weekend's game against Minnesota.

Schottenheimer said he wants to keep the Vikings guessing whether they'll face the scrambling Flutie or Drew Brees, a pocket passer.

LaDainian Tomlinson missed practice again after having a wisdom tooth removed Tuesday. Schottenheimer thinks Tomlinson will be back at practice today.

BRONCOS: Linebacker John Mobley, who has a bruised spinal cord, was put on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season. He's fourth on the team with 46 tackles.

Mobley won't require surgery but will need six to nine months to heal, doctors said. His agent, Brian Mackler, said the seven-year veteran hopes to return by the start of training camp next season.

RAMS: Torry Holt leads the league with 63 catches for 978 yards, and needs only 22 for his fourth straight 1,000-yard season. At this pace, the NFL record of 1,848 yards by Jerry Rice of the 49ers in 1995 is in jeopardy. The franchise record set by teammate Isaac Bruce, 1,781 yards, also in 1995, is in danger, too.

"I'm not getting too concerned with putting up the huge numbers," Holt said.

In his last five games, Holt has 45 catches for 735 yards and seven touchdowns.

FALCONS: Cornerback Juran Bolden will start Sunday against the New York Giants even though he faces criminal charges for driving a stolen car and marijuana possession. Falcons coach Dan Reeves decided to take a lenient approach with Bolden, who was promoted to the starting lineup shortly after he was hauled off to jail.

"We feel that Juran will be found not guilty, or we wouldn't feel like he's a part of our football team," Reeves said.
