Aching RB Davis iffy for Panthers
But WR Dyson hopeful of return
The Associated Press
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Stephen Davis was held out of practice with a suddenly sore ankle, the same day wide receiver Kevin Dyson made his first appearance after tearing his Achilles' tendon in the spring.
Davis, the NFC's top rusher with 992 yards, is questionable for Sunday's game with Tampa Bay.
When asked if he could play against the Bucs, Dyson didn't hesitate to say yes. Coach John Fox was a little more guarded.
"Never say never," Fox said. "He hadn't been playing a long time, so it's going to take a lot of time to get him ready. But he's coming along good."
REDSKINS: Coach Steve Spurrier and defensive end Bruce Smith discussed Smith's displeasure at not starting Sunday against Dallas, the first time since 1986 Smith played in a game he didn't start.
"He thought we were singling him out because we hadn't had much pass rush," Spurrier said.
Spurrier said there is a good chance Smith would start this weekend against the Seahawks.
BILLS: Running back Willis McGahee was activated, even though the first-round pick isn't ready to play his first NFL game. The former University of Miami star tore ligaments in his left knee against Ohio State in January.
RAIDERS: Coach Bill Callahan met with cornerback Charles Woodson after the four-time Pro Bowl player said Callahan was stubborn and had lost control of the team. "It was very positive," Callahan said of the discussion.
Backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, who has a torn ligament in his left knee, was put on injured reserve.
COLTS: Brad Pyatt, the AFC's top kickoff returner, has a minor fracture in a vertebrae and is likely to be sidelined for six weeks.
JAGUARS: Prosecutors dropped charges against former Jacksonville linebacker T.J. Slaughter, accused of pointing a gun at two men in a passing car while he was driving. Slaughter's attorney, Hank Coxe, said Slaughter reached an agreement with state prosecutors to surrender his gun and make a $500 charitable donation in exchange for dropping the charges.
JETS: Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet has a concussion and will not play Sunday against Oakland. He has 27 catches for 289 yards and one touchdown this season.
FALCONS: Kurt Kittner will get another start at quarterback despite his 32.4 rating.
