Fantasy Football Column

Reader dubious about duo's temporary trade

By John Nemo
Enquirer contributor

It's time to empty the Inbox and answer some of your most pressing fantasy football questions, ranging from something my fantasy league knows all too well - controversy - to an update on the running back situation in Minnesota.

FANTASY MOVES
• Start him: Steve McNair, Titans. He's the hottest quarterback in all of fantasy football right now, and will be going against a Carolina defense than can be beaten through the air. Not the best matchup around, but at this point you cannot afford to sit McNair, can you?
• Bench him: Donovan McNabb, Eagles. Forget his long touchdown pass last week - that was all Duce Staley, who took off on a broken play, caught a short pass along the sideline and made several defenders miss. A visit to the Meadowlands against a hungry Giants team isn't what the struggling McNabb needs to get back on track. Six weeks into the season, it's decision time regarding Donovan. It's either time to let him go, or else strap yourself in for what looks to be a very bumpy ride the rest of the way.
• Pick him up: DeShaun Foster, Panthers. Yes, yes, Stephen Davis wasn't seriously hurt on Sunday and should be back in the lineup, but his arm injury was a good reminder of the pounding he endures and the likelihood that he could break down again at some time this season. Foster looked fantastic against the Colts, running with the kind of dazzling combination of power and speed that made everyone drool before he blew out his knee as a rookie. At the very least, he makes sense as someone to stash away in larger leagues, or definitely as insurance if you own Davis.
John: I was hoping you could provide me with your opinion about an ethics question I have. The guy I was playing this past weekend had only one serviceable RB because of the bye week, so he traded Rod Smith and Warren Sapp to another team for Troy Hambrick and Marcel Shipp. That seems like a fair trade and all, so I didn't care, but I see this morning that those two guys are doing another trade ... the exact same players back to each other. They pretty much lent each other a player for the weekend since one guy needed a WR and the guy I was playing needed a RB. I needed a QB this week ... I could have done a trade just like they did for one week, but I didn't even think about it as it seems unfair. Do you think what they did is ethical? Am I off base by being upset?

- Brad

Brad, the league I've been commissioner of for almost 10 years has also experienced this phenomenon, which we dubbed "one-week trades." In my opinion it was (and still is) a complete fiasco, and as a league, we voted to ban these types of deals, because in reality it is nothing more than owners "sharing" their players to help one another win.

When in doubt about a rule in your fantasy football league, compare it to the real NFL. I don't think you'd see the Bears calling the Rams this week and saying, "Hey, we'll loan you Anthony Thomas this week if we can borrow Isaac Bruce while Marty Booker heals. Then we'll swap back. Sound cool?"

The bottom line is, fantasy football is supposed to be about having fun. If guys are finding loopholes in your league's rulebook and using shady tactics to better their squads, everybody loses.

John: I want to know if Moe Williams will stay as the featured back or if Onterrio Smith will take over. I didn't enjoy them splitting carries the other week. Also, will Moe be phased out when Michael Bennett returns?

- (Anonymous)

Anonymous, first of all, come out of hiding! What is your real name? Is this Doug Chapman?

All running back by committee jokes aside, Minnesota remains one of the best rushing teams in the NFL, thus the Vikings are a constant topic of discussion. Smith, Chapman and Williams split the carries by almost exact thirds in the Vikings' last game, and I'd expect you'll see a similar trend in the coming weeks. When a team is winning by rotating different backs with different strengths into certain situations, why stop? Go with what works.

As for Bennett's impact, his rehab is going better than expected, and believe it or not, he could be back on the field as soon as Nov. 2. Count me among the doubters who thought he was out for the season.

Williams has already told reporters in Minneapolis that he fully expects to be placed back on special teams and see only spot duty in the backfield once Bennett returns. Obviously, now would be a good time to trade away Moe (if you can still get anything for him) and snag Michael Bennett off your league's waiver wire.
