ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Bills running back Willis McGahee will start practicing this week, nearly 10 months after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left knee.
McGahee is set to practice for the first time today, opening the possibility for the first-round pick to begin playing within three weeks.
The clearance from Bills team doctor John Marzo came after McGahee worked out in front of Bills president Tom Donahoe and coach Gregg Williams. McGahee also worked out Monday and his injured knee showed no sign of swelling.
Last week, the former Miami star passed a physical given by Hurricanes team doctor John Uribe, who repaired the three ligaments McGahee tore in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State in January.
McGahee, selected 23rd overall, opened the season on the reserve non-football injury list. NFL rules bar a player on the list from practicing until between the start of Week 7 and the start of Week 10, when a three-week window opens for the Bills to determine whether to activate him.
Because of his long rehabilitation, McGahee is expected to require at least two weeks of practice before the Bills would consider using him in a game.
RAIDERS: The family of the late E.W. McGah, a team co-founder who hired Al Davis decades ago is claiming in Alameda County, Calif., court that Davis has plundered the franchise for perks that include a private jet and interior decorating at his Palm Springs vacation home.
The family claims Davis has mismanaged team finances and compromised the family's one-third ownership in the Raiders, and also says the team is illegally denying access to financial records. For these alleged transgressions, Davis should be replaced as team general partner, according to the lawsuit.
"This is a frivolous lawsuit without merit that was filed by disgruntled representatives of an estate," Raiders general counsel Jeff Birren said.
PACKERS: Starting defensive end Joe Johnson is out for the season because of a tear in his right quadriceps tendon.
JETS: Jon McGraw, the team's starting free safety, will be out two to four weeks due to a partially dislocated right shoulder. He totaled 21 tackles over five games this season.
REDSKINS: The team placed tight end Robert Royal, who is out for the season, on injured reserve and re-signed tight end Zeron Flemister.
Royal had five receptions for 48 yards in six starts this year. Flemister lost his starting job to Royal last month when he suffered a hamstring injury.
BRONCOS: Linebacker Ian Gold was placed on injured reserve after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, and Denver signed cornerback Scott Turner.
Gold was second on the Broncos in tackles with 39 and had two interceptions. Turner, an eight-year veteran, has five interceptions in 92 career games.
DOLPHINS: The team signed long snapper Jeff Grau to replace Sean McDermott, who was released.
