Titans QB rolls up 421 yards passing; Miami resourceful in win vs. Jaguars

The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher sent backup quarterback Billy Volek in to handle the final snap Sunday, allowing Steve McNair to walk off the field to a standing ovation from the fans still in the stands.

The attention caught McNair by surprise.

"I didn't know what was going on when I came out," McNair said. "That was great and one of those moments you don't see often in the NFL because the games seem to be ... tight. It was a great feeling just to come off the field and everybody give you a standing ovation."

McNair earned it. He had a perfect quarterback rating in the first half, finished with a career-high 421 yards passing and threw three touchdowns to Derrick Mason as the Titans routed the Houston Texans 38-17.

McNair helped the Titans roll up 535 yards of total offense, their highest since November 1991 and their run-and-shoot days in Houston.

The Titans (4-2) returned home for their only game in Nashville in October determined to erase the memory of last week's loss at New England. It wasn't hard against Houston (2-3), as Tennessee also intercepted three passes, returning one for a TD.

McNair finished the first half 11-of-12 for 233 yards and a perfect 158.3 rating, the third time in his career he has done that. He finished 18-of-27, which included a 50-yard TD to Mason at the start of the fourth quarter for a 30-10 lead.

The victory was the 80th for Fisher, making him the fourth-youngest coach to reach that total behind John Madden, Don Shula and Bill Cowher.

Dolphins 24, Jaguars 10

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Their quarterback threw the best block. Their tight end scored by recovering a fumble. Their starting defensive ends had a bigger impact than anyone on offense.

The Miami Dolphins simply added to Jacksonville's woeful season with a strange win that gave the Jaguars yet another ax to grind.

Randy McMichael scooped up a fumble for the go-ahead score, Jay Fiedler ran interference for Ricky Williams, and defensive ends Jason Taylor and Adewale Ogunleye played superbly to help the Dolphins (4-1) plunge Jacksonville (1-5) into a deeper hole.

McMichael's touchdown with 11 1/2 minutes left put Miami ahead 17-10, and the game wasn't secure until Sam Madison picked off Byron Leftwich and returned it 29 yards for a score with 1:28 remaining.

Jets 30, Bills 3

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Jets sure know how to regroup after a bye week.

Vinny Testaverde threw three touchdown passes, and the Jets sacked Drew Bledsoe a season-high seven times en route to their first win of the season.

The Jets improved to 3-0 after a week off under third-year coach Herman Edwards.

Last season, they were 1-4 entering the bye but finished the season with the AFC East title and a 9-7 record.

This year, the Jets were 0-4 before Sunday. They could not run or stop the run and could barely score, especially inside the 20, before Sunday.

Curtis Martin ran for a season-high 77 yards on 20 carries as the Jets finally got their running game going, tallying over 100 total yards on the ground for the first time this season.

And the Jets held Travis Henry to 53 yards on 18 carries - though he did catch seven passes for 35 yards as Buffalo (3-3) played without top receiver Eric Moulds (groin).

Testaverde finished 11-of-17 for 130 yards and threw three touchdown passes in a game for the first time since tossing five in a 40-37 overtime victory over Miami on Oct. 23, 2000.

Broncos 17, Steelers 14

DENVER - Jason Elam settled a tight struggle between the AFC's top two defenses.

Elam hit a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift Denver past Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh (2-4) tied it at 14 on Jerome Bettis' 1-yard dive and an improbable 2-point conversion, but the Broncos (5-1) got the ball back at their own 20 with 2:41 left.

The Steelers nearly halted Denver's winning drive, but safety Brent Alexander dropped an interception at Pittsburgh's 20 with less than a minute left.

Pittsburgh QB Tommy Maddox avoided throwing an interception for the first time in five games, but was sacked seven times in his first game in Denver since starting his career there.
