Jaguars' Brunell says he's healthy, ready to go

But Del Rio won't address club's quarterback situation yet

The Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mark Brunell expects to be ready to play Sunday.

Whether he will play is another question - and whether his coach agrees with his prognosis is yet another sticking point, as the winless Jacksonville Jaguars take their unsettled quarterback situation into the next game, against San Diego.

Brunell was cleared to practice Wednesday but also was listed as questionable on the injury report with a scraped-up elbow, a gash that required five stitches Sept. 22. Rarely one to stir things up, Brunell made his feelings clear after a practice in which he threw lightly on the side, saying it would be frustrating not to play if he's healthy, which he feels he will be.

"That will be real difficult - feeling physically ready to roll and not being able to," Brunell said. "That would be a hard one, particularly since we need a win so bad."

Rookie Byron Leftwich said he took the majority of snaps with the first team in practice. Backup David Garrard took the rest. Brunell got none.

"I don't have any clue what's going to happen," said Leftwich, the first-round draft pick who made his first career start last week.

Coach Jack Del Rio didn't offer any hints as to what he'll do, and he refused to budge when asked if Brunell would start if healthy.

"We'll reassess the quarterback situation tomorrow," he said. "I'm not going to get into talking about what might or might not happen."

JETS: Curtis Conway was the New York Jets' biggest free agent signing this past offseason. He now has a seat on the bench.

Coach Herman Edwards said Wednesday Santana Moss would start at receiver when the Jets play next, home against Buffalo on Oct. 12.

Edwards said Moss gives the Jets a speedier option at receiver.

"Curtis is fine, he understands," Edwards said. "I told him, 'Hey, you're still going to play receiver, and we expect you to catch balls and make plays for us.' "

Conway could be considered a disappointment. The 11-year veteran signed a three-year deal in March worth up to $7.5 million.

REDSKINS: A federal judge has overturned a ruling that canceled the Washington trademark, finding there was insufficient evidence to conclude the name is disparaging to American Indians.

PACKERS: Linebacker Torrance Marshall participated in his first practice with Green Bay since returning from his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy Wednesday.

After the practice, Marshall addressed his teammates as they gathered for coach Mike Sherman's standard post-practice speech.

"I just thanked everybody for welcoming me back, apologized for missing the four games and told them I hoped I could contribute right away and help the team," Marshall said.

TITANS: Tight end Frank Wycheck practiced for the first time in a month with Tennessee but isn't ready to say when he'll return to the lineup. He sustained the second concussion of his career in the Titans' season-opening victory over Oakland.

Wycheck was listed as questionable for Sunday's game with New England but didn't sound as if he expected to play.

"I'm not totally cleared up to the point where I could go out and risk getting another hit," Wycheck said Wednesday.
