Romanowski misses 1st game in 16 years

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski missed the first game of his 16-year career Sunday when the Raiders hosted the San Diego Chargers.

Romanowski sustained a concussion in the opener against the Tennessee Titans, but he played in two more games before team doctors held him out of Sunday's game. He had 20 tackles in the first three contests.

The Boston College product had played in 243 consecutive games - the fifth-longest among active players at the start of the season. He had started 131 straight.

• Titans linebacker Peter Sirmon was hospitalized for precautionary reasons with several small fractures in his lower back. Titans coach Jeff Fisher said the injury was not spinal cord-related and there was no paralysis.

• Clinton Portis, star running back for the Broncos, missed Sunday's game at home against the Lions with a bruised sternum.

• Bills running back Travis Henry was held out of Sunday's game against Philadelphia because of torn rib cartilage, leaving Buffalo without its leading rusher.

• Carolina linebacker Dan Morgan did not play against the Falcons because of a pulled hamstring, making it the 15th game the Panthers' former first-round draft pick has missed because of injury.

• Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs tied an NFL record by getting a sack in each of his first four games, a feat accomplished previously by Santana Dotson of Tampa Bay in 1992.

• Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde overtook Dan Fouts for fifth in NFL history with 3,301 career completions.

• Byron Leftwich made his first start at quarterback for Jacksonville as Mark Brunell sat out with an injured throwing elbow. Leftwich finished 17-for-36 with three interceptions and 231 yards in a 24-20 loss to the Houston Texans.

• Pittsburgh had 69 yards rushing against the NFL's top-ranked run defense and has only 181 yards rushing in its last three games against Tennessee.

• With 41 yards rushing against Miami last weekend, the Bills have combined for 62 yards on the ground in their last two games.

• New England had seven inactive players: LB Mike Vrabel, LB Ted Johnson, G Damien Woody, T Adrian Klemm, WR David Patten, NT Ted Washington and FB Fred McCrary.
