McCardell punished for illegal blocks

The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa Bay receiver Keenan McCardell was fined $12,500 by the NFL for two illegal blocks, including one that sidelined Carolina lineman Kavika Pittman for the rest of the season.

McCardell said Friday the blocks were legal and he has filed an appeal of the fine.

BROWNS: Wide receiver Dennis Northcutt hurt his chest during the Browns' opener against Indianapolis, then aggravated the injury this week during practice. The Browns have listed him as questionable for Sunday's game.

Northcutt leads Cleveland's receivers with 10 catches for 119 yards.

BRONCOS: Coach Mike Shanahan said Friday he expects quarterback Jake Plummer to start Monday night's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Plummer's mildly separated throwing shoulder has gotten better each day since he injured it Sunday in a 37-13 victory at San Diego.

PATRIOTS: Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin will miss the rest of the season after surgery Friday on his broken left hip, further depleting New England's defense.
