Isolation Booth: James vs. Rice
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Tory James played for the Raiders for three years and practiced against two future Hall of Fame wide receivers - Jerry Rice and Tim Brown.
They know each other's strengths and weaknesses, and the Bengals will need another solid performance from James to prevent the Raiders from blowing open the game with their pass offense.
"There are no secrets," James said.
James, among six veterans released Feb. 27 by the Raiders for salary cap reasons, had an interception and two passes broken up against Denver. The Bengals intercepted Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer three times, but Oakland's Rich Gannon is the reigning league MVP.
The seemingly ageless Rice, who will turn 41 in October, had four receptions against the Titans in the opener. He had 92 catches last season.
Rice and Brown work well with Gannon in Oakland's precision pass offense, which allows the receivers to run for big gains after the catch.
James and the Bengals also have to be aware of Charlie Garner catching the ball out of the backfield, which is the Raiders' idea of a running game.
Garner had seven receptions for 112 yards - including a 42-yard touchdown - against Tennessee.
