Denver shooting leaves Steelers' Porter wounded

The Associated Press

DENVER - Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was seriously wounded when he was among six people shot early Sunday outside a northeast Denver bar following the Colorado-Colorado State football game.

Porter was in serious condition after being shot in the buttocks, but the injury wasn't life-threatening, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. One of the other victims died, Jackson said.

Porter, 26, was not involved in any confrontation. The All-Pro linebacker, a five-year veteran, is a Colorado State graduate.

Steelers coach Bill Cowher said the team would not place Porter on injured reserve, which would sideline him for the season.

• Running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, once a valuable backup to Jerome Bettis, was among six players cut Sunday as the Pittsburgh Steelers reached the 53-man roster limit.

Also released was cornerback and kick returner Hank Poteat, who played extensively in the Steelers' dime defense in the playoffs last season after safety Mike Logan was injured.

LIONS: Detroit acquired Olandis Gary from the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, giving the team another option for replacing injured starter James Stewart.

COLTS: Indianapolis traded safety Rich Coady to the St. Louis Rams for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

• Kicker Mike Vanderjagt kept his job.

RAMS: Troy Edwards, who entered training camp as St. Louis' No. 3 wide receiver, was among the cuts Sunday

PACKERS: Seventeen-year veteran center Frank Winters was among eight players waived Sunday. Veteran running back Lamar Smith was also waived.

TITANS: Tennessee needed more room under the salary cap, so the Titans cut veteran quarterback Neil O'Donnell Sunday.

SAINTS: Running back Ki-Jana Carter and tight end David Sloan were among 17 players cut Sunday by the New Orleans Saints and starting safety Mel Mitchell was placed on injured reserve.

DOLPHINS: Robert Edwards' inspirational comeback with Miami ended when he was released.

The Dolphins also put wide receiver Oronde Gadsden on injured reserve.

The Dolphins tried unsuccessfully to trade Edwards, who returned and played a key role as Miami's third-down back last season after missing the previous three with a devastating left knee injury.

BUCS: Injured tight end Rickey Dudley was among seven players released Sunday by Tampa Bay. Dudley suffered a high left ankle sprain in the final preseason game and would have been sidelined for six to 10 weeks.

SEAHAWKS: Shawn Springs will miss the first half of Seattle's season because of a broken bone in his shoulder.

The cornerback was injured in the first quarter of Friday night's loss to Denver
