Eagles' Staley ends holdout
NFL notebook: But no word yet on extension for RB
The Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Eagles running back Duce Staley ended his 27-day holdout Saturday, reporting to camp.
Staley met with coach Andy Reid after arriving in Philadelphia and will report to practice today, team spokesman Derek Boyko said.
Staley, who is entering his seventh NFL season and led the Eagles in rushing last season with 1,029 yards and added 541 receiving yards, has been fined $5,000 for each day of the holdout, a total of $135,000.
He is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $2.2 million this season.
Earlier this month, Staley released a statement criticizing Eagles management for not "seriously" discussing his future with the team. Staley pressed for an extension and said he wanted to finish his career with the team.
"Unfortunately, not one person in the Eagles front office has given me any idea of what the future holds for me as a player for the Eagles beyond this season," Staley said in the statement, which was addressed to his teammates, coaches and Eagles fans.
With a pair of young running backs in Correll Buckhalter and Brian Westbrook, the Eagles haven't seemed eager to make a long-term commitment to Staley. But relations between the team and Staley thawed a bit last week, with Reid meeting at least twice with Staley's agent, Derrick Harrison.
RAMS: Safety Kim Herring broke a bone in his left forearm while covering the opening kickoff of Saturday's game with Buffalo. He started 16 games last season, recording 106 tackles and three interceptions.
COWBOYS: Quincy Carter was named starting quarterback after two consistent and turnover-free preseason starts. Coach Bill Parcells chose Carter over Chad Hutchinson, Dallas' starter the final nine games of last season.
"I just thought he moved the ball better and had a little bit better presence," Parcells said of Carter.
In his last two preseason starts, Carter completed 18 of 29 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns.
Hutchinson was 13-of-26 for 129 yards in two games, with three fumbles in 46 snaps.
DOLPHINS: Backup quarterback Brian Griese suffered ligament damage to his left big toe during Miami's 30-21 exhibition victory over Atlanta on Friday. He'll miss the Dolphins' final preseason game, Thursday at New Orleans, but is not expected to need surgery or be sidelined for an extended period.
COLTS: Running back Ricky Williams, who has a sprained right knee, and backup quarterback Brock Huard, who is nursing a sore left index finger, probably will be sidelined for Monday night's preseason game against Denver.
