QBs are not Browns' only concern

Davis not happy after loss to Titans

The Associated Press

BEREA, Ohio - Cleveland Browns coach Butch Davis has a lot more to worry about than choosing a starting quarterback.

The Browns opened their first preseason game by giving up a 15-play, 72-yard touchdown drive, then failed to run or catch the ball with their first-team offense.

Suddenly, choosing between two quarterbacks who both proved capable of leading the team last season doesn't seem like the Browns' biggest concern.

"There's bigger issues than who this quarterback is going to be as far as the success of this football team," Davis said Monday. "We've got to find out who the two guards are going to be. We've got to find out who the middle linebacker is going to be. There are other positions that I'm a lot more concerned about ... than who's going to be the quarterback."

Neither Kelly Holcomb nor Tim Couch asserted himself as the Browns were beaten 10-6 at Tennessee in the exhibition opener.

"Whoever wins the quarterback job is going to be a (darn) good football player and we know that the guy behind him is going to be a (darn) good player," Davis said. "There's some other areas of this team that we've got to make some improvement these next three weeks."

Other players didn't seem as concerned as Davis after Saturday's game.

"We've got three games left (in the) preseason and we'll be fine," said running back William Green.

BILLS: First-round pick Willis McGahee could sign with the Buffalo Bills as early as today.

Once McGahee signs, the team is expected to place him on either the physically unable to perform list or the non-football injury list, which would put him on the sideline indefinitely this year.

COWBOYS: Dallas offensive lineman Larry Allen missed practice Monday because of a swollen right ankle, another possible setback for the seven-time Pro Bowler who played just five games last season.

• Dallas signed free agent defensive end Eric Ogbogu, waived three players and said rookie center Al Johnson will miss the season with a knee injury.

Released Monday were offensive lineman Marques McFadden, receiver DeVeren Johnson and defensive end Derrius Monroe.

Coach Bill Parcells said Johnson, the Cowboys' second-round draft pick and projected starter, will be placed on injured reserve when the team trims its roster to 65 players in two weeks.

PACKERS: The Packers are trying to lure Dan Wilkinson to Green Bay after losing run-stuffer Gilbert Brown to a season-ending and career-threatening arm injury.

Wilkinson, released July 29 by the Washington Redskins after he refused to take a cut in his team-high $3.5 million salary, was scheduled to arrive in Green Bay late Monday for a two-day visit.

LIONS: The Detroit Lions activated linebacker Brian Williams and safety Corey Harris from the injured list Monday.

Guard Ray Brown, who had been excused from the first two weeks of camp, also joined the team for Monday's workouts.

REDSKINS: Washington, coming off an embarrassing performance by the run defense in the exhibition opener, signed defensive tackle James Cannida Monday.

Cannida started seven games with Indianapolis last season and spent the previous four years with Tampa Bay.
