Buffalo, top pick McGahee trying to work out fair deal

NFL notebook: Former Hurricane RB isn't ready to start practicing

The Associated Press

Running back Willis McGahee isn't healthy enough to begin practicing, nor is he yet prepared to sign his first contract with the Buffalo Bills.

The first-round pick was at home in Miami continuing to rehabilitate his injured left knee Wednesday as the rest of the Bills rookies and selected veterans reported for training camp. Practices open today with the remainder of the team to report on Saturday.

"We're still working and, naturally, we hope to get something done," McGahee's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said, referring to his client's contract talks. "But we still have significant work to do."

The urgency is not getting McGahee into camp.

The former University of Miami star tore three knee ligaments during the Hurricanes loss to Ohio State in last January's Fiesta Bowl. So even when he does sign, the Bills are expected to place him on the physically unable to perform list, relegating him to observer status on the sideline for what could be the entire season.

At issue is how to structure a contract that's fair to both McGahee, drafted 23rd overall, and the Bills, who gambled on selecting a player who only began jogging in May and is likely a year away from playing his first NFL down.

"Willis is in a unique situation," Bills president Tom Donahoe said. "We really haven't put a timetable on Willis because we want him to try to get back at some point this year."

PACKERS: Is this Brett Favre's final season? Even he doesn't know for sure.

"You guys will probably be asking me the same thing three years from now," Favre said Wednesday.

Favre recently revealed that a year ago he was planning on calling it quits after the 2002 season. He changed his mind after the Packers went 12-4 and he narrowly missed his fourth MVP award.

"I'm still having fun, still feel I can play at a high level. Obviously the Packers feel like I can still play," Favre said.

PATRIOTS: New England extended the contract of coach Bill Belichick for two years on Wednesday, taking him through 2006. Belichick, 51, is entering the fourth year of his original five-year deal in which he led the Patriots to the Super Bowl championship in his second season.

BENGALS: Cincinnati waived second-year cornerback LaVar Glover on Tuesday.

Signings

• Charles Rogers signed a six-year contract with a signing bonus of just more than $14 million with the Detroit Lions Wednesday. Other financial terms, including the total value of the contract, were not released.

• Second-round draft pick Chris Kelsay signed with Buffalo. Selected 48th overall out of Nebraska, the defensive end signed a four-year deal that included a $1.37 million bonus.

• Two-time Heisman Trophy finalist Ken Dorsey signed a three-year contract with San Francisco Wednesday. Dorsey was the 49ers' seventh-round draft pick.
