Akili signs with Packers

Football notebook

The Enquirer and wire reports

Green Bay agreed to terms Friday with free agent quarterback Akili Smith, who was placed on waivers last week by the Bengals.

Smith will make the league-minimum $530,000 on his one-year deal.

AF2 SWARM AT HOME: The Cincinnati Swarm will meet their Midwest Division rival Green Bay Blizzard at 2 p.m. today at U.S. Bank Arena. The Swarm are one game behind the San Diego Riptide for the final playoff spot in af2's National Conference.

McGAHEE NOT READY: Running back Willis McGahee, recovering from knee surgery, won't be ready to practice when the Buffalo Bills open training camp in six weeks. That doesn't discourage the former University of Miami star, who was the Bills' surprise first-round pick in April's draft.

CARDS-BUCS DEAL: Running back Thomas Jones was traded by Arizona to Tampa Bay, marking the departure of another of the Cardinals' numerous draft disappointments. Arizona got second-year wide receiver Marquise Walker in return. Jones was acquired after Bucs running back Michael Pittman's indictment on an aggravated assault charge this week.

WORLD BOWL: Summit Country Day and Miami University grad Dustin Cohen plays for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe at noon today (Ch. 19, 45).
