Griese watch begins after his release

NFL notebook: Agent says Miami is the frontrunner

The Associated Press

DENVER - The Brian Griese era officially came to a close Monday when the Denver Broncos released their former starting quarterback to clear space under the salary cap.

Griese was touted as the replacement for John Elway, but Denver cut ties with the ex-Pro Bowler after two mediocre seasons.

Griese was benched in Denver's final game in 2002, then was given permission to talk with other teams about a possible trade.

Griese's agent said Miami appears to have the best shot at landing him.

BUCCANEERS: Running back Michael Pittman apologized Monday for his arrest in Arizona two days ago after police say he rammed a car carrying his wife, their son and a baby sitter.

No one was hurt in the accident Saturday near Pittman's home in Phoenix. The county attorney's office will determine whether charges will be filed against Pittman.

PACKERS: Defensive end Joe Johnson said Monday he was not in his car during a recent traffic stop that resulted in a drug charge against him. Johnson also denied he was arrested and taken into custody. He insinuated someone else was driving his car when it was pulled over May 22 in Tifton, Ga.

• The team signed veteran running back Lamar Smith.

49ERS: Receiver J.J Stokes was released Monday, ending a nine-year relationship between the 49ers and the former first-round draft pick who no longer fit into their plans. Stokes, who lost his starting job to Tai Streets, was cut in a move that will save the Niners $2.25 million.

• Terrell Owens was a no-show Monday when San Francisco began a four-day minicamp at team headquarters.

SAINTS: New Orleans signed receiver Joe Horn to a three-year contract Monday. Terms were not disclosed.

ETC: NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has requested a meeting with Pasadena officials to discuss the city's proposal to attract a team to the Rose Bowl.

But it's almost certain to be several years before an existing NFL team relocates to the Los Angeles area.
