It was a bad day to be a backup pro quarterback in the state of Florida.
The Miami Dolphins released Ray Lucas and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped Shane Matthews two days after selecting Texas' Chris Simms in the NFL Draft.
Matthews, a 10-year veteran, signed with the Buccaneers on March 14. Lucas, who asked for his release, could sign soon with his former coach Bill Parcells in Dallas. It also could clear the way for Miami to pursue Denver's Brian Griese, who is expected to be released in July.
"Without mentioning any specific names, we feel there are some quality veteran quarterbacks who can help this football team and we're confident that we will be able to add a quarterback like that to our roster before the start of training camp," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said.
