All four Steelers restricted free agents to return

NFL Notebook

By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - All four Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free agents, including starting fullback Dan Kreider, will be under contract by Monday.

Also agreeing to terms were linebacker Clark Haggans, who was third on the team with 61/2 sacks last season, nose tackle Kendrick Clancy and cornerback Hank Poteat.

All four accepted one-year contracts of $605,000 before Friday's deadline to sign with another team. Each can become an unrestricted free agent after the 2003 season unless a long-term contract is signed.

Of the four, only Haggans drew interest from other teams. He visited the Houston Texans, but wasn't offered a contract. A team would have surrendered a fifth-round draft pick to sign him.

Jamel White agrees to one-year offer

BEREA, Ohio - The Cleveland Browns have restricted free agent running back Jamel White under contract.

But there is still a chance he could be traded before the NFL draft happens Saturday.

By signing the Browns' one-year tender of about $1.3 million, White on Friday allowed teams who might want to trade for him to know how his contract will fit.

"Jamel wants to be a Brown," agent Josh Wright said. "By the same token, he realizes signing frees the Browns to make whatever decisions they need to make on draft day."

Wright said the Browns might yet negotiate a long-term deal with White after the draft.

White wants to be a starter and a featured running back. The Browns appear committed to last year's first-round pick, William Green, as the featured back.

The Browns protected themselves from losing White in free agency with the one-year tender, because it required a team to give up a first-round draft pick to sign him.
