Steelers to meet with Blake, Frerotte

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers, looking for a backup to Tommy Maddox, will meet over the weekend with free agent quarterbacks Jeff Blake and Gus Frerotte.

The Steelers would like to bring back Charlie Batch as the backup, but he apparently prefers to compete for a starting job.

Batch, once the Detroit Lions' starter, was on the Steelers' roster last season but did not play behind Maddox and Kordell Stewart, who was released.

Blake started for the Baltimore Ravens last season and passed for 336 yards and two touchdowns against Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale.

Frerotte opened the season as the starter in Cincinnati but quickly was benched in favor of Jon Kitna.

The Ravens have sought to retain Blake as their starter, but he has not been impressed with their offer.

Frerotte nearly joined the Steelers in 2000, but they chose to sign Kent Graham instead. Frerotte has also played for Washington, Detroit and Denver.

The Steelers could draft a quarterback if they don't bring back Batch or sign a veteran.
