Bengals entertain 8 free agents
By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Bengals have signed just one free agent, defensive lineman Carl Powell from the Redskins. But the Bengals continued Wednesday to bring players into Cincinnati. The team confirmed visits by linebackers Mike Peterson (Colts) and Kevin Hardy (Cowboys) and cornerback Denard Walker, formerly with Denver.
The Bengals have confirmed visits from eight players, not including Powell.
Talks with at least three players who visited Tuesday turned serious. The Bengals made an initial proposal to Tennessee defensive tackle John Thornton, agent Kevin Omell said Wednesday.
"John was impressed with the organization and where it's headed under Marvin (Lewis), the defensive scheme and how he would be used," Omell said. "He was one of several good defensive linemen in Tennessee, and because of the rotation, he didn't get on the field as much as he would like."
Thornton, a four-year veteran and former college teammate of Bengals linebacker Canute Curtis at West Virginia, was in New England on Wednesday and planned to honor commitments to visit Arizona and Detroit.
Wide receiver Jermaine Lewis, known primarily as a two-time Pro Bowl kick return specialist, also was impressed by his visit to Cincinnati. He was with the Ravens when Marvin Lewis was defensive coordinator.
Jermaine Lewis will visit Washington and Baltimore, who exposed him in the expansion draft to Houston a year ago. The Bengals are a serious contender for Lewis, who played his college ball at Maryland.
Bengals fullback Nicolas Luchey also was in town Monday night and Tuesday, and the Bengals and his representatives continue to talk.
The Bengals continue to negotiate with defensive tackle Sam Adams, who played with Jermaine Lewis and for Marvin Lewis on the 2000 Super Bowl-winning Ravens.
Adams, who played last season for the Raiders before his salary-cap related release, is talking to the Bengals and Buffalo Bills. His agent, Angelo Wright, is seeking a three-year contract that he calls "cap friendly" and that Adams will be able to fulfill.
