Brooks' great season could turn Super
Tampa linebacker claims only a ring would be fitting
The Fort Myers News-Press
SAN DIEGO - Derrick Brooks is the No. 1 player on football's No. 1 defense.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker also was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. He's the best of the best.
On Sunday, the Bucs face their biggest challenge of the season in Super Bowl XXXVII when they play the Oakland Raiders, who have the league's No. 1 offense and MVP in quarterback Rich Gannon.
"It's very fitting we're the best at what we do defensively," Brooks said. "They're the best offense."
Brooks has been with the Bucs since 1995. He has grown up with the franchise, been part of its maturation from pro sports' laughingstock to one of the best franchises anywhere. Now, he's in his first Super Bowl.
"We welcome the challenge," Brooks said.
One of Brooks' primary tasks might be containing Oakland running back Charlie Garner. Tampa Bay defensive tackle Warren Sapp has reminded Brooks about that.
"You can't miss him, big boy," Sapp said. "I know he's up for the task."
Sapp, Brooks and safety John Lynch were named to the Pro Bowl this season.
Lynch arrived in Tampa first, in 1993. Brooks and Sapp were first-round picks in 1995. They're cornerstones of the defense.
"They've done that for years here," Bucs coach Jon Gruden said. "They have been staples on our football team, guys we look to for not only playmaking but leadership. Those are three great football players. I know I expect them to be in the Hall of Fame someday. They back it up on the practice field and in the meeting room. They are great representatives of the NFL.
"That's the best compliment I can give them. As players and people, they are consistently there for you every day."
Brooks has been there every time Tampa Bay plays. He has started all 16 games for seven years - 142 consecutive starts.
Brooks was named to the Pro Bowl this season for the sixth straight time. His 1,277 career tackles are a franchise record. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns this season, setting a record for linebackers. He also returned a fumble for a touchdown.
But Brooks' work isn't done. Although his resume glitters with Hall of Fame credentials, one thing is missing - a Super Bowl ring.
"I don't think you've heard any of our players say we're just happy to be here," Brooks said. "If I read that, I'm personally going to visit that individual. ... We're here to get the job done."
