Del Rio new candidate for Jaguars

The Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolina defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was given permission Tuesday to interview for the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Panthers gave Jacksonville permission to speak to Del Rio in Alabama, where Carolina's staff is scouting the Senior Bowl.

Del Rio is largely responsible for lifting Carolina's defense from worst in the league two years ago to second best last season.

"Any time a guy gets a chance to interview, you don't stand in his way," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said.

The Jaguars fired coach Tom Coughlin last month.

Also being interviewed by Jacksonville this week is Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who also has interviews scheduled with the Bengals. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz also is a candidate.

Before joining Carolina under new coach John Fox, Del Rio was linebackers coach for the Ravens in their Super Bowl season.

The former linebacker played 11 years in the NFL with the Saints, Chiefs, Cowboys and Vikings, making the 1994 Pro Bowl. He retired after the 1995 season.
