Assistant coaches' status
Bengals president Mike Brown said the new head coach would be allowed to choose his staff. The coach Brown hires also will determine who, if any, assistants will be back next season. The staff:
Dick LeBeau, former head coach. Has 30 years of experience as NFL assistant, and says he would like to coach again next year.
Bob Bratkowski, offensive coordinator: Contract expired. Offenses ranked 23rd and 18th this season. Could be back if Bengals hire defense-oriented head coach.
Mark Duffner, defensive coordinator: Contract extends into next season. Defense slumped from No.9 to No.17, due in part to injuries and poor rush defense. He could be back if head coach is offensive coach.
Paul Alexander, offensive line: Contract expired. Bengals assistant since 1994. An experienced NFL assistant, he should get a job if he is let go by the Bengals.
Jim Anderson, running backs: Contract extends into next season. Will interview for head-coaching job and likely return in 2003 no matter who is hired.
Ken Anderson, quarterbacks: Contract extends into next season. Criticized at times for poor quarterback play and failure to develop top draft picks.
Louie Cioffi, defensive assistant. Contract believed expired. Where Duffner goes, he could follow. Has earned shot as position coach with eight years of NFL experience.
Kevin Coyle, cornerbacks. Contract expired. Another Duffner follower. Coyle has big-time college experience as college coordinator.
John Garrett, tight ends. Contract expired. Detail-oriented coach who has potential to scout if he leaves coaching.
Rodney Holman, assistant strength and conditioning. Contract expired. His future depends on what new coach wants to do with strength program. A former Bengals tight end, he could do a number of jobs.
Tim Krumrie, defensive line. Contract expired. Players rally behind him and play hard as unit. Finishing eighth season on Bengals staff. He is a Mike Brown favorite.
Steve Mooshagian, wide receivers. Contract expired. Will interview to be head coach at Sacramento State. He'll likely return to college game if he gets Sacramento job.
Darren Perry, safeties. Contract extends into next season. A LeBeau hire and former player who seemed overwhelmed at times as a rookie coach. Safeties were a problem, thanks to some injuries, this season.
Al Roberts, special teams. Contract expired. Expected not to return. Units made too many mistakes and failed to play consistently.
Bob Surace, offensive assistant. Contract believed expired. First season with Bengals.
Kim Wood, strength and conditioning. Contract believed expired. Some players not happy with Wood's program.
