NFL injury report

Holmes strains hip against Broncos

The Associated Press

Kansas City could be without running back Priest Holmes next week. Holmes strained his right hip in the second half of the Chiefs' 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday and was on crutches in the locker room after the game.

The running back declined to discuss his injury, and coach Dick Vermeil did not know its severity.

"He strained it," Vermeil said. "The doctors don't seem alarmed. He couldn't play tomorrow."

Holmes, the league's total offense leader and second-leading rusher, went to the bench after being pulled down from behind by Tyrone Poole on a 56-yard run to the Denver 4-yard line late in the third quarter.

Moments later, Holmes walked slowly to the locker room, accompanied by the training staff.

Holmes entered the game with 1,454 yards rushing, and his long run gave him 161 yards in the game.

He was on pace to break the NFL record for touchdowns in a season. He still is two shy of the record of 26, which the Rams' Marshall Faulk set in 2000.

Chiefs fullback Tony Richardson dislocated his right shoulder against Denver and probably is out for the season.

Lions rookie quarterback Joey Harrington left Detroit's game against Tampa Bay with an irregular heartbeat and was taken to the hospital for tests and observation.

He was to stay overnight at Henry Ford Hospital as a precaution. The irregular heartbeat returned to a normal rhythm before he left the stadium, and the team was taking extra precautions because he has no previous history of heart problems.

"Joey Harrington is doing fine right now," said internist Keith Burch, the Lions' team physician.

Harrington might miss next Sunday's game at Atlanta, but could be available for the finale against Minnesota at home.

He played one possession and threw one incomplete pass before leaving in the second quarter after he began to feel ill.

Harrington, the No. 3 overall pick out of Oregon, started his 12th straight game for the Lions. He entered Sunday's game completing just over 50 percent of his passes, with 2,294 yards, 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Anthony McFarland could miss the rest of the season with a broken right foot.

McFarland was carted off the field in the first half of Tampa Bay's 23-20 win over the Lions. McFarland has started 10 games this season and has 31 tackles.

"My heart feels pretty deep with the thought of not having him," Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said.

Lions KR Eddie Drummond also left the game with a concussion after a 91-yard kick return. Tampa Bay safety John Lynch missed the game with a strained neck, and Detroit running back James Stewart sat out with neck and toe injuries.

Redskins running back Stephen Davis separated his right shoulder against the Eagles. Coach Steve Spurrier said Davis probably is out for the season.

Dolphins guard Jamie Nails hurt his left Achilles' tendon on the final series against the Oakland Raiders and will miss the rest of the season.

Carolina Panthers tight end Wesley Walls left after the first offensive series against Pittsburgh with a sprained foot, apparently aggravating an earlier injury.

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick injured his throwing hand in the second quarter against Seattle, hitting a helmet on his follow-through, but stayed in the game. Vick was 21-of-38 for 240 yards, and he ran for 40 yards on 13 carries.

Green Bay NT Gilbert Brown and LT Earl Dotson, and San Francisco CB Ahmed Plummer did not play because of injuries.

Giants CB Will Peterson, who missed the last two games with a concussion, got a stinger in first quarter and did not return.
