Rams' QB merry-go-round spins

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS - Kurt Warner kept insisting his hand was fine during a Monday morning meeting with St.Louis Rams coach Mike Martz.

The horrid numbers Warner had put up lately indicated otherwise, and X-rays showed a hairline fracture on his right hand. That confirmed Martz's suspicion that everything wasn't right with his quarterback, who is a two-time league MVP.

Warner will be out two-to-three weeks, although Martz said he'll be the No.3 quarterback during that time.

Warner had trouble gripping the ball in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He fumbled trying to tuck in the ball and also lost control of the ball trying to pass.

"I think I felt good. It was just a lot of crazy things happened," Warner said after the game.

Martz said backup Jamie Martin would start this week against the Kansas City Chiefs, and Marc Bulger would be No.2. Bulger, 5-0 as a starter when Warner was out earlier this season, has a sprained right index finger.

BEARS: Chicago coach Dick Jauron said running back Anthony Thomas likely would miss the rest of the season with a broken left index finger. Thomas, who has 721 yards on 214 carries, won NFL offensive rookie of the year honors last season.

BROWNS: Cleveland will likely be without Dennis Northcutt (sprained knee) for at least a week. Northcutt has eight touchdowns: five receiving, one rushing and two punt returns.

COLTS: Indianapolis expects starting safety Idrees Bashir to miss the next two weeks because of a hamstring injury suffered in Sunday's 19-3 win over the Houston Texans. Bashir is fifth on the team with 63 tackles and is tied for second with two interceptions.

DOLPHINS: Quarterback Jay Fiedler will start next Monday night against the Chicago Bears after sitting out six weeks with a broken right thumb. Fiedler played in the second half of Sunday's 38-21 loss at Buffalo and reported no lingering problems with the thumb.

Receiver Cris Carter also will play against the Bears after missing the last four games with a kidney ailment. The Middletown native, who came out of retirement to play for the Dolphins, will back up starters James McKnight and Chris Chambers.

JAGUARS: Quarterback Mark Brunell wore a splint after injuring the middle finger on his throwing hand against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brunell will have tests on the finger and expects he won't be at full strength for practice Wednesday.

PACKERS: Ahman Green probably will miss practice until Friday because of his bruised left knee, leaving Green Bay's running back questionable for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Rookie Tony Fisher could make his first NFL start in Green's place.

RAVENS: Michael McCrary was placed on injured reserve, a move that could usher Baltimore's two-time Pro Bowl defensive end into retirement. McCrary, 32, has participated in only five games this season because of a nagging knee injury.

REDSKINS: Washington signed kicker Jose Cortez and punter Craig Jarrett, and released kicker James Tuthill. Cortez, who was cut last week by the San Francisco 49ers, made 18 of 24 field goals this season but lost his job to Jeff Chandler.
