Bengals Week 13 report card

Ask Mark
PASSING OFFENSE, C-plus: Jon Kitna threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, but his one interception was a killer. Ravens rookie safety Chad Williams returned it 98 yards for a game-swinging touchdown. With a chance to take the lead inside the two-minute warning, when the Bengals most needed a pass completion, three of four Kitna throws were no good from the Baltimore 10-yard line. Consistent red-zone failures have marred an otherwise fine second-half showing.

RUSHING OFFENSE: D: Corey Dillon had a 5-yard touchdown run, but the Bengals were held to 73 yards on 30 attempts (2.4-yard average). Peter Warrick was saddled with a minus-11 yard run on a goofy reverse call on the first offensive snap. It was the sixth time in 12 games the Bengals have posted 78 or fewer rushing yards.

PASS DEFENSE, C-minus: The Bengals had a single-game high of three sacks and put consistent pressure on the Ravens' Jeff Blake. They also allowed just 115 yards. But the Bengals couldn't intercept a quarterback who had thrown six picks in five previous games. Also, the Bengals couldn't contain Blake on his game-winning touchdown pass to Todd Heap, letting Blake roll outside for what seemed like an eternity.

RUSH DEFENSE, F: The Bengals gave up 148 yards on the ground, 121 to Jamal Lewis, and most of those were right up the middle. The Bengals' inability to control the run has hurt them all season. They've given up 134 or more rushing yards in eight games. They're sure to keep their second-to-last league ranking.

SPECIAL TEAMS, D: Neil Rackers made the most of a second chance, drilling a 40-yard field goal to put the Bengals up 16-14 at halftime. He has made seven kicks in a row. Rudi Johnson, subbing for the injured Brandon Bennett, broke a 42-yard kickoff return, and the kickoff and punt coverage teams were impressive. But a blocked Nick Harris punt returned 22 yards for a touchdown by Ron Johnson negated all that good. Williams blocked the ball on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Baltimore cut the Bengals' lead to 23-21.

COACHING, D: The Bengals aren't executing in the clutch in all areas, so the entire staff shares a piece of the 1-11 record. Defensive coordinator Mark Duffner and his staff haven't figured out what to do against the run, and . And Bob Bratkowski's offense can't punch the ball into the end zone in the fourth quarter. Effort is good, but they're supposed to try hard.
