Traditional holiday: Turkey, pie and NFL doubleheader

Today's picks

Ask Mark
Emmitt Smith will play in his 13th Thanksgiving Day game when his Dallas Cowboys play host to the Washington Redskins today.

His favorite was his first, in 1990, when he ran over Redskins cornerback Darrell Green for one of his two touchdowns in a 27-17 Dallas victory.

The Cowboys and Redskins will wear retro classic uniforms from the 1960s. New England (uniforms circa 1985) and Detroit Lions (1930s), also will wear classic uniforms.

PATRIOTS (6-5) at LIONS (3-8): The Lions will seek their 10th victory in their past 14 Thanksgiving games. New England's big edge is its No. 6-ranked pass offense against the Lions' 30th-ranked pass defense.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who leads the league with 24 touchdown passes, made his NFL debut two years ago on Thanksgiving against the Lions. New England should get its first Thanksgiving victory in its third try. PATRIOTS 31-20.

REDSKINS (5-6) at COWBOYS (4-7): It's the first Thanksgiving Day game featuring these rivals since 1996. Dallas is 21-12-1 on Thanksgiving, including 5-0 against Washington. But the Redskins might have found their quarterback, at least for the time being, in Danny Wuerffel, who had a career-high 235 yards in an upset of St. Louis Sunday. REDSKINS 23-13.

LAST WEEK: 8-8. SEASON: 109-66-1.
