Too little, too late

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

For the third time in five games, the Bengals' offense failed to score points late in the fourth quarter with the ball inside the opponent's 5-yard line. Each time, the Bengals had the chance to tie or take the lead.

On Sunday, the Bengals trailed 29-21 and had a first-and-goal from the Pittsburgh 5-yard line with 59 seconds remaining. Four Jon Kitna passes fell incomplete.

Final score:

Steelers 29-21

On Nov.17, the Bengals trailed the Browns 27-20 with 7:59 left in the game. The Bengals had a first down on the Cleveland 7-yard line. Corey Dillon ran 1 yard, 5 yards and twice for no gain from the 1. The Bengals had one more possession that also came up short.

Final score:

Browns 27-20

On Oct.27, the Bengals trailed the Titans 30-24 and had a first down on the Tennessee 9-yard line with 2:32 remaining. Dillon lost 1 yard on a run before gaining 6. On third down, Kitna ran for 3 yards to the 1. On fourth down, Dillon ran off right tackle but tripped over pulling guard Matt O'Dwyer and fell near the goal line. Coach Dick LeBeau's challenge of the referees' ruling was unsuccessful.

Final score:

Titans 30-24
