It's wait-and-see for Rams, injured star Faulk

NFL notebook

The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS - It's still a waiting game with the St.Louis Rams and their star running back, Marshall Faulk.

Faulk missed Monday night's victory over the Chicago Bears because of a sprained right ankle and a strained tendon in his left foot. His status for Sunday's road game with the Washington Redskins won't be determined until game time, Rams coach Mike Martz said Thursday.

Faulk didn't practice, instead meeting with team doctors about the ankle, the more serious of the injuries. Martz said Faulk won't practice the rest of the week.

"I think we'll just keep him out until they make a decision," Martz said. "What's helped him is staying off this thing and letting it heal. I don't know if we'll have him for Sunday or not."

CARDINALS: Starting outside linebacker Rob Fredrickson will miss at least two games because of a neck injury. Arizona coach Dave McGinnis said Levar Woods would start Sunday against the Oakland Raiders.

CHARGERS: Linebacker Donnie Edwards and guard Bob Hallen returned to practice after sustaining concussions Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers and are expected to play this weekend against the Miami Dolphins.

COWBOYS: Former Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson got back together with team owner Jerry Jones to tape an interview for Sunday's NFL pregame show on Fox.

Johnson coached the Cowboys from 1989-93, but he and Jones had a falling out. Barry Switzer succeeded Johnson.

"We were able to answer some questions that have never been answered." Johnson said. "I thought it was extremely productive for both us, and maybe we can eliminate a few of the myths that have been going on for years."

EAGLES: Donovan McNabb might not have surgery on the broken right ankle that could sideline him the rest of the regular season. Philadelphia's quarterback wore a cast on the ankle after meeting with a specialist in Houston, and will be re-examined in about two weeks.

JETS: Dave Szott could return as soon as Dec.2, a Monday game at Oakland.

Szott, who signed with New York as a free agent in March, tore the ACL in his right knee May 29 and had surgery June 19. Now, after two weeks of light practice, he is getting repetitions on the offensive line.

"I'm happy the way the knee responded," Szott said. "The doctors are happy the way it has responded. It's 90 percent healed, at least."

GIANTS: Cornerback Jason Sehorn criticized the NFL for treating first-time ephedra offenders more harshly than cocaine users, New York's Daily News reported.

Sehorn, who said Wednesday he used ephedra daily until last spring, is upset that players testing positive for the over-the-counter stimulant receive four-game suspensions, but a positive first test for cocaine or marijuana results only in placement in the NFL's drug treatment program.

"You want to snort some cocaine, get yourself high, get caught, now you go in a program," Sehorn said. "They put you in a drug program to try to help you, which is good, but you can keep on playing."

LIONS: Detroit signed veteran cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock, who was released Tuesday by the New England Patriots. Hitchcock has 19 interceptions in his eight-year NFL career.

PACKERS: Green Bay signed free-agent running back Jay Graham, who played in 22 games for the Baltimore Ravens from 1997-99, then was out of football in 2000 before signing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2001.

SEAHAWKS: Seattle claimed fourth-year offensive tackle Chris Terry, a day after he was waived by the Carolina Panthers. To make room for Terry, the Seahawks waived wide receiver Kevin Kasper.
