Favre won't miss start

The Associated Press

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre won't need surgery on his sprained left knee, and the Packers are optimistic he won't miss any games.

An MRI on Monday confirmed the team's original diagnosis of a sprained lateral collateral ligament and showed no structural damage to the star quarterback's knee.

The Packers are idle this week.

“I think he probably would have been able to play (if the Packers played this week), but I probably would have held him out,” Green Bay coach Mike Sherman said Monday.

COWBOYS: Quincy Carter is out and Chad Hutchinson is in as Dallas' starting quarterback.

The Cowboys made the surprising switch one day after Carter threw four interceptions - two around the end zone - in a 9-6 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

“We're not going to be in the business of changing quarterbacks week to week,” Dallas coach Dave Campo said. “We're going to give Chad Hutchinson a chance to be the quarterback of this team.”

Hutchinson hasn't played a down in the NFL and last took a snap in a game that counted as a sophomore at Stanford. He returned to football last summer after spending four years playing professional baseball.

BRONCOS: Center Tom Nalen will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nalen, Denver's only four-time Pro Bowl player on offense, has been an anchor for the Broncos since their Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998.

BROWNS: Cornerback Corey Fuller reinjured his right knee during Sunday's win over the Houston Texans and most likely will be sidelined for a few weeks.

BUCS: Quarterback Brad Johnson has a fractured left rib and is doubtful for this week's game against Carolina.

If he isn't ready to play against the Panthers on Sunday, he will be replaced by backup Rob Johnson, the former Buffalo Bills starter.

PANTHERS: Quarterback Chris Weinke spent the night in the hospital with a concussion, leaving Carolina with rookie Randy Fasani as its only healthy option for this week's game against Tampa Bay.

Panthers coach John Fox said he didn't know if Weinke would be able to face the Buccaneers and their top-ranked defense.

RAIDERS: Rookie cornerback and punt returner Phillip Buchanon will miss two months with a broken left wrist - yet more bad news for reeling Oakland.

Buchanon, the team's top draft pick out of Miami, underwent surgery Sunday night and had pins inserted into his wrist.

RAVENS: Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis hopes to practice this week. Lewis, who has missed two straight games, lifted weights at Baltimore's training complex.

REDSKINS: Washington coach Steve Spurrier switched starting quarterbacks for the third time this season, promoting Shane Matthews and benching rookie Patrick Ramsey for this weekend's game against the Indianapolis Colts.

“Patrick had three games, playing very well the first game, and since then it hasn't worked out,” Spurrier said. “He's obviously not as prepared as he should be.”
