Life as a Rookie

Each Sunday, Bengals first-round draft pick Levi Jones talks about life as an NFL rookie.

I got my first start last week, and all I kept thinking about before the game was not letting my teammates down.

We worked well together. Matt O'Dwyer is a good veteran player at left guard for me to play next to. He knows what he's doing.

People say I had a good game. I gave up the only sack, though. I think I did OK. I did a lot of things right. But I know what I did wrong.

There are specific things I need to work on, but I don't want to go into detail about them and expose my weaknesses to my opponents.

Let me just say my run blocking was good. I need to work on things in my pass protections. I gave up the one sack, but people don't notice all the other times that you do the right thing. That's football. That's life.

I am very critical of myself. I am my own worst critic. I have always been that way.

It was satisfying to get Corey Dillon 164 yards rushing. That's our reward. We help the running back get loose and keep guys off the quarterback. But we all felt like we should have helped Corey get 200. For real.

Jon Kitna played a good game at quarterback. He has good command of the huddle. He said something to me once. The Colts ran a stunt, where the end went inside and the tackle came around the outside. He got a little too close to Kitna. Jon asked me if I saw it. I had a relative call me who saw the game on TV. He wanted to know what Jon said to me after that play.

Jon knows what each guy should be doing on each play. He is a good leader.

This week, we play the Steelers. It's another challenge. I'll be seeing a lot of Kimo von Oelhoffen and Joey Porter. They're big, strong and fast.
