Browns' Holcomb has broken leg

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND - Browns backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb broke his left leg and sprained his knee during a fourth-quarter comeback Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens.

Holcomb, who threw two touchdown passes in the final period of the Browns' loss, suffered a hairline fracture of his left shinbone, the team said Tuesday.

The Browns did not say how long Holcomb would be sidelined.

Browns coach Butch Davis offered little information on Holcomb during his Monday news conference. Asked about Holcomb's injuries, Davis said Holcomb “gutted it out and he finished the game.”

At the time, Holcomb was undergoing tests at a hospital.

Holcomb's agents told newspapers that Holcomb was injured when a Ravens lineman rolled onto his leg.

“Kelly told me (Monday) his leg was hurting like a dog, but he said, "I couldn't come out of that game,”' Holcomb's agent, Frank Bauer, told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Holcomb led Cleveland's frantic fourth-quarter comeback from a 23-point deficit after starter Tim Couch was sidelined by a concussion.

Holcomb, who limped in the final minutes, threw two touchdowns passes and barely missed on a third in the closing seconds, finishing 13-for-23 with 180 yards in the 26-21 loss to the Ravens. His final throw was intercepted in the end zone.

Holcomb started the Browns' first two games of the season as Couch recovered from an elbow injury. He completed 44 of 69 passes for 524 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Fans in Cleveland booed Couch Sunday as Baltimore opened a 23-0 lead by the end of the third quarter.

While recovering a fumble near Cleveland's goal line, Couch was hit by four Ravens and suffered a concussion. As he knelt on the turf, fans began cheering.

“If fans don't like the way I'm playing or the way we're playing, they have a right to boo us or boo me. But to cheer when I got hurt, that's a whole other level with me,” Couch said Monday.

“I'll remember being on the ground, a little dazed and hearing cheers. It's tough. To have the rest of the country watching as home fans cheered when I got hurt, is something that didn't set well with me. It's embarrassing for me, and it's tough for my family to sit in the stands and watch that.”

JETS: Cornerback Jamie Henderson was placed on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season.

Henderson dislocated his right shoulder in Sunday's loss to Kansas City. The second-year player from Georgia suffered the same injury in the Jets' second preseason game this year, at Baltimore Aug.15, and was sidelined for the remainder of the preseason and the Jets' first three regular-season games.

BEARS: Left guard Rex Tucker is out for the season because of a broken leg, and wide receiver David Terrell has a broken right foot that might need surgery.

Terrell, the Bears' top draft pick in 2001, hurt his foot late in the fourth quarter Monday against Green Bay. He has nine catches this season, three for touchdowns.

Tucker dislocated his left ankle and broke a bone in his leg in the third quarter Monday and had surgery Tuesday.

PACKERS: Defensive end Joe Johnson's season is almost certainly over. He needs an operation to repair his left triceps muscle, which he tore in the Monday against Chicago.

“It looks like he'll probably be out for the rest of the year,” defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said.

GIANTS: New York signed cornerback Reggie Stephens and waived wide receiver Jonathan Carter.

Stephens played in 15 games for the Giants in 2000 and was waived by Kansas City during training camp this year.

EAGLES: Second-year quarterback A.J. Feeley was added to the team's roster and safety Julian Jones was released.

A fifth-round pick last year, Feeley completed 10 of 14 passes for 143 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the team's season finale, against Tampa Bay. He had been on the practice squad since Sept.26.
