The isolation booth

Bengals TE Matt Schobel vs. Colts LB Mike Peterson

Ask Mark
Why did the Bengals bother to draft tight ends Sean Brewer and Matt Schobel if they don't intend to use them?

Brewer is out for a couple more weeks with a knee injury. With Levi Jones starting at left tackle in place of the injured Richmond Webb, the “jumbo” run-blocking package is — thankfully — history. It told defenses, “Here comes Corey Dillon.”

Now, throw the ball to Schobel. It could happen today. Quarterback Jon Kitna, who likes to use tight ends, is making his first start.

Schobel will see a lot of Colts left linebacker Mike Peterson, who has a team-high 31 tackles in three games with one pass deflection.

A four- or five-catch day from Schobel would help balance the offense and maintain ball control. He also needs to handle Peterson or whomever else he's assigned to block in the running game.

The Bengals spent third-round picks on Brewer and Schobel, and they traded up to get Schobel.

        Let him play.
