Bengals Report Card

Week 3: Falcons 30, Bengals 3

Pass offense, F: Quarterbacks Gus Frerotte and Jon Kitna each threw a costly interception, and both of their passer ratings are below 50.0 this season. Michael Westbrook and Peter Warrick dropped passes. The average gain per pass play was 2.8 yards.

Run offense, C: Considering the breakdown of the passing game, the rushing offense at least gained positive yardage consistently. The average gain per rush play was 3.4 yards.

Run defense, F: For the first time, quarterback Michael Vick wasn't the Atlanta Falcons' leading rusher. T.J. Duckett had 67 of the team's 143 rushing yards, but Vick killed the Bengals. Yeah, he's good, but Vick had an 11.2-yard average on five carries and couldn't be contained.

Pass defense, F: The Bengals had only one sack. Former rookie free agent Brian Finneran looked like a Pro Bowl wide receiver against Bengals cornerback Jeff Burris. For the third week in a row, an inexperienced quarterback lighted up the Bengals: San Diego's Drew Brees (first career start), Cleveland's Kelly Holcomb (third start) and Vick (fifth start). The Bengals have no interceptions in three games.

Special teams, F: Place-kicker Neil Rackers accounted for the only points, but the punt-coverage team allowed a 10-yard cushion on returns. The Bengals had 10 men on the field for a short punt. The Bengals have received 19 kickoffs this season and started a league-high six drives inside the 20.

Coaching, F: For the second time in three games, the Bengals weren't ready to play, and this game was on prime-time television. Eight penalties, including five in the first seven minutes, illustrated a lack of discipline. The staff has few, if any, answers on how to turn the tide. Watching more film hasn't worked. How about sticking poor-performing players on the bench?
