Falcons waive ex-Bengal Heath

The Associated Press

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The winless Atlanta Falcons cut former Bengals cornerback Rodney Heath in a roster shakeup Tuesday.

The Falcons (0-2) also waived defensive end Ronald Flemons and receiver Kahlil Hill and brought in defensive end Reggie McGrew, cornerback Kevin Mathis and receiver Damon Gibson.

Heath lasted less than a week with the Falcons. He was signed after Ray Buchanan received a four-game suspension from the NFL for using steroids.

Mathis has played with Dallas and New Orleans. He started 29 games the last two seasons for the Saints, making five interceptions, but wasn't invited to an NFL training camp this year.

The Falcons are desperate to improve their depth on the defensive line. Travis Hall missed the first two games with an abdominal injury, while Flemons hardly played.

McGrew was a first-round pick by San Francisco in 1999 but missed his entire rookie season after tearing a triceps tendon. He played 22 games the last two years and made his first career start in the 2001 playoffs.

Gibson spent last season as Jacksonville's primary punt and kick returner. The Falcons planned to use Allen Rossum in that role, but he sustained a hamstring injury Friday.

Hill, a sixth-round pick from Iowa, was promoted from the practice squad to handle the punt return duties, but he lost a critical fumble that led to a touchdown in Chicago's 14-13 victory.
