Defense's ranking rises


Is 17th in league, but offense 31st in overall scoring

        The Bengals improved their league ranking in statistics, if not their record, in Sunday's 20-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

        The defense's overall rating climbed to No.17, and the offense is No. 25 in total yards gained.

        But the Bengals are 31st, or second to last, in five categories: punt-return average, kickoff-return average, gross and net punting averages, and points per game. The Bengals are averaging 6.5 points per game, ahead of only the Baltimore Ravens (3.5).
